Lór sin do Laighneachaibh. A n-Ucht Leacain 15 Feb. 1668. The scribe writes at p. 46: 'Per me Eoghan carrach Mac Conmhail 1668'. On the previous page he says: 'A Dhia nach bhfuil píopa tobac agam: 'O God! would I had a pipeful of tobacco.'

3. H. iv. 25, 186-191, has a collection of annal entries headed as follows:

Do neithibh as ionchuimhnighthe andso síos do réir derbhtha sheinleabhar ionchreidthe gidh co n-abrad aroile go b-fuil cuid díbh brégach acht cheana ní cóir an seanfhocal do sh´rughadh. .i. gur laoidh nó litir chothaighes.In this manuscript the last five entries correspond to nos. 1-4, [i.e. 1256, 1525, 1570, 1595] 6, above [i.e. entry for 1105]. At the end is: Finit do na neithibh sin. On p. 185 are the following verses:

  1. The date is a scribal error for 493. 🢀

  2. H. iv. 25 has Conall mac Maoileachluinn Ui Mhordha. According to Father Carrigan, Diocese of Ossory, ii, 393, Conall O Mordha was lord of Leix as early as 1520, and died in 1537. 🢀

  3. Ceadach O Mordha is the Ceadach Ruadh whose death is placed at 1541 in par. 19: "Kaer Mackedo O Moore and Lyssagh Mackedo O Moore were hanged" Cal. of Carew Papers, 350. 🢀

  4. See Canon Carrigan's date above see note to entry 1525.1. 🢀

  5. The surname of Domhnall mac Cathaoir was Mac Murchadha. 🢀

  6. The same authority says in this case 1547 or 1548. 🢀

  7. Margaret Butler, daughter of Piarus, earl of Ormond, was wife of Brian Mac Gillapadraig, first baron of Upper Ossory, created June 11, 1541, and died 1575, Carrigan loc. cit. 🢀

  8. Donnchad Liath O Conchobhair was probably, like two of his sons, a medical doctor or "surgeon." For the sons Donnchadh Og and Conchobhar see Gleanings from Irish Manuscripts 153-4. 🢀

  9. Master Framus. Francis Cosby was during many years a freebooter in the Leix area. "On the 18th of May the Mores and Conors came to the fort of Leix, with such a power as they never had before, intending to take the castle belonging to the Fort. Sir Henry Radeclyff, who was in the fort, led out 60 soldiers and 30 kerne and rescued the whole prey. Francis Cosby, seeking some of the rebels where they were making merry, met with Donough O Conor himself, accompanied with Cormac O Conor's son, that is in Scotland, and Rychard Oge the basse Garentyne, and after a long fight killed Cormak's sonne, and xxx or xl of the beste of them. Cosby himself kylled Rychard Oge with his awne hands, whyche wold not have bene don by no man els" Cal. of State Papers, June 8, 1558. 🢀

  10. Four Masters 1578. "Killing of Rory Oge O More, who had sent a messenger to entrap the baron of Upper Ossory. He hath hitherto escaped all expectation, either by swiftness of footmanship, or else by sorcery or enchantment. The baron, of his own charge and forces, has adventured himself in this service" Cal. of State Papers, 137. Lord deputy Sidney took credit for the murder himself, Cal. of Carew Papers 356. Where was Cul an Mhuine Ruaidh? The correct genealogy of Brian, second baron of Upper Ossory, is Brian, son of Brian (first baron), son of Brian na Lúireach. (d. about 1511), son of Sea´n. 🢀
