The present text represents pages 1–80 of the edited text.

Editorial declarations

Correction: Text has been checked and proofread twice. All corrections, including some by Gerard Murphy and supplied text, are tagged.

Normalization: The electronic text represents the printed text. The editor's corrigenda and apparatus criticus have been integrated. Where h- is prefixed to nouns, this has been hyphenated off. Expansions shown in italics in the hardcopy have not been marked. Letters supplied in square brackets by the editor are tagged sup resp="KHJ".

Hyphenation: When a hyphenated word (hard or soft) crosses a line break, the break is marked after the completion of the hyphenated word. There are no instances of hyphenated words crossing a page break.

Segmentation: div0=the text; div0=the section. Paragraphs are marked; page-breaks are marked pb n=""; line-breaks are marked lb n="". Poems and passages of rhetoric speech are treated as embedded texts, with speakers marked. Foliation is marked mls unit="folio" n="nn".

[The same passage, so far as legible in P; which has skipped from muinnter to muinntir] 🢀

  78. [K breaks off here.] 🢀

  79. [Poem from L2, C; L gives a completely different account in a poem of four verses too corrupt to be worth printing; B has simply ⁊ adbeart mo cen conoire cuanna ⁊ reliqua. 🢀

  90. [F very indistinct except the e] 🢀

  91. [F very indistinct except the me] 🢀

  92. From atāaid to the end of the poem has been inked over carelessly in black by a later hand, and it is not always easy to make out what was beneath. Line 2116 is corrupt, possibly the MS reads lagshell under the black ink. The second illegible letter seems to be a d or an o, certainly not t or c. Read ataid 'n-a laighe for the first part of the line? Compare however Laighell Luath-bhuilledhach who was killed together with Fiacha Baicedha, l. 1929? But as it stands that would make no sense. laighell would give good rhyme with tenn, in which case something is lost before it. But the illegible letters show that the loss is after. 🢀

  93. The obscure letters in this line appear to be darran-(with dot over hyphen) triana (so the black ink; underneath perhaps trena) atancqd (or underneath perhaps atincqd; the last four letters extremely obscure). The ending should be a monosyllable in -uaidh to give deibhidhe rhyme with arm-ruaidh. But in any case the line is too long as it stands. 🢀
