  1. Mairg duine bhraitheas é féin!
    mo bheart is dá héis do-chím;
    ní fhionnfa neach fir ná mná
    mo rún féin go bráth a-rís.
  2. A bhean chumainn, a chruth fial,
    do bhí agam riamh i ngioll,
    (mairg léigeas a rún le mnaoi!)
    fuaire a chách a-taoi fám chionn.
  3. Oram féin do fríth an locht, —
    ní beag nod dá chur i gcéill;
    tig an cumann druim-tar-ais,
    buailtear duine dá shlait féin.
  4. Ní thiubhrthá orlach ar ór
    díom, a inghean is óg snuadh;
    ciodh gearr ó 'niugh gus i-né,
    do bhuaidhir mé an t-uisge suas.
  5. Méad na toile tugais dúinn
    mairg dár gealladh, a ghnúis nár,
    umam féin ó 'taoi go fuar;
    comhfhada théid fuath is grádh.
  6. Do chuala féin fad' ó riamh
    cumann deise do dhiall ruinn, —
    duine i Mumhain na múr ngeal
    díobh, is duine do Leath Chuinn.
  7.  p.114
  8. Do bhádar dá bhliadhain déag
    an dá sgoláir (fá sgéal suairc)
    gan deadhail — gá díochra searc
    ar fud Éireann teas is tuaidh?
  9. D'éis a múinte i mbailtibh sgol,
    dála an chúpla ar nách gclos béim,
    do thionnsgain gach duine dhíbh
    dol an tráth-soin dá thír féin.
  10. Do b'iad ráite an fhir a-ndeas,
    's an sruth déar ag teacht re a ghruaidh;
    "Ní dóigh go bhfaiceam, a ghrádh,
    gnúis a chéile go lá an Luain."
  11. "Dá dtí," ar an sgoláir a-dtuaidh,
    "olc do cheachtar uainn dá bhríogh,
    ós ag deadhail dúinn ar ndias,
    go madh dhuitse bhias a dhíoth!"
  12. D'éis ar gcumainn gus a-nocht
    ní mór, a bhean na bhfolt slim,
    nách í freagra an fhir a-dtuaidh
    fuaras uait ag sgaradh rinn.
  13. Ní hí h'anshocracht ná t'fhearg,
    ní díth céille, ní ceard bhaoth,
    ní cruas, ní droichtheist, ní tnúth,
    do-bheir deadhail dún ar-aon.
  14. Gan tú san chúige i mbíodh Meadhbh,
    nó i gcrích Laighean na learg réidh,
    nó i ndúthaigh Dheadhaidh mhic Shin, —
    tug mo dheadhail ribh rem ré.
  15.  p.115
  16. Ní fhuarais, gidh meanma shaobh,
    a ghlac shocair gan taom gcruais,
    cúis mo thréigthe acht mé id ghar;
    maith gach cunnradh i bhfad uait!
  17. Gach ar léigeas leat dom rún,
    a ghéag úr an aignidh shéimh,
    aithnim díot a cheilt ar chách
    go bráth bráth, 's a cheilt ort féin!
  18. Im ghar choidhche, is bím gan fear,
    a ghnúis díoghainn na ndearc mall,
    an fear leis nách beitheá réidh
    ní léigfinn féin ar chéad marg.
  19. A stuaigh mhíolla na mbas ngeal,
    gé léige mo shearc i bhfaill,
    fuaire id thoil ní thugas fós;
    mo sgaradh riot gá mó mairg?
