GeneralContext |
Close-up of centre of Panel. |
Location |
church at Breedon. |
GeneralDescription |
These are the central fragments on a wall panel, at the east end of the south aisle. This is dated to the early ninth century. |
GeneralDescription |
It is suggested that the figure in the centre is Mary. This figure is set in an architectural frame of a double arch supported
on cushion-like capitals and bases. The head is draped in a veil and does not have a halo. She is holding her right hand in
blessing and is holding a book in her left.
|
GeneralDescription |
The three figures on the left of Mary are haloed, their hair is long, and they are dressed identically. Two of them may be
carrying scrolls and the other is carrying a book.
|
GeneralDescription |
The three figures on the right of Mary seem to be moving to the right. They all seem to be carrying books. The figure on the
right is dressed like the figures on the left of Mary. The other two are dressed differently. They seem to be wearing an overgarment,
where the frill hem seems to be at about calf level.
