GeneralContext Cross head fragment.
Location Durham Cathedral.
Dimensions 34.5cm (13.25'') high, 84.5cm (33.25'') wide, and 16cm (6.25'') thick.
GeneralContext Stone type: coarse-grained, massive yellow/grey sandstone.
GeneralDescription Cross head fragment, dated to second quarter of eleventh century.
GeneralDescription In the centre is the remains of a roll moulding surrounding a cross, which no longer has a figure on it, apart from his left hand. Below the arms of the cross are the remains of four figures, two on either side, all facing out. The two nearest to the circular frame are squeezed into it. They are all wearing pleated robes.
GeneralDescription On the left arm there are two figures. The one on the left has an exaggerated right shoulder and is holding a shafted cross in his right hand. The figure on the right is holding a book.
GeneralDescription The right arm is a mirror image of this, except that there is a relief feature between the inner figure and the roundel, which seems to be a bar.
