What's this all about?

The Emoji Parser was created as part of the research undertaken for an MA in Digital Arts and Humanities. The Parser brings an element of meaning to those quirky little icons we use in our electronic communications in this digital age. For this researcher certainly, it is interesting to discover the correct meaning of an emoji which she has been using freely in text messages, simply because it appears to be the most appropriate to convey the meaning intended. We base much of our use of emoji on their appearance, simply because a parser such as this one did not exist to allow for their decryption.

This parser will return the official meaning and codepoint of some of the emoji used by Carina Finn in three of the poems contained in The Grey Bird: Thirteen Emoji Poems in Translation, which is published by Coconut Books and is available here. The Parser will also return a number of alternative meanings for these emojis, based on how they look to this researcher who viewed them using several platforms: A laptop running Windows 8, a smartphone powered by Android, and a Mac running OS X.

The user may enter an emoji directly quite easily when viewing the parser on a smartphone, because emojis are available as part of the keyboard. Alternatively, a word or phrase may be entered in the search box, and the parser will return any and all emoji which contain that word in the official name given to it by the Unicode Consortium.
