Since 2001, Cathal O’Mahony has worked as a research scientist at the Coastal and Marine Research Centre (CMRC) – University College Cork, Ireland. Cathal is a member of the governance group within the CMRC and his research has primarily focused on capacity building and developing mechanisms for implementation of integrated approaches to coastal management and planning.

Through involvement in research that seeks to understand how the coast works and how it is used, Cathal has experience from a number of projects involving interaction with end users and/or stakeholders, including: Partnerships Involving Stakeholders in the Celtic Sea Ecosystem (http://www.projectpisces.eu); Innovative Management for Europe’s Changing Coastal Resource (http://www.imcore.eu); Coastal Communities Network (http://coconet.ucc.ie); Coastal Practice Network (http://www.coastalpractice.net); Irish Coastal Network (http://iconet.ucc.ie); and the Coastal Research and Policy Integration (http://corepoint.ucc.ie) projects. Recent research activity has incorporated additional research themes such as adaptation to climate change (CoastAdapt; http://www.coastadapt.org); and policy support for sustainable development in coastal environments (http://www.sustain-eu.net).

The communication of science, and integrating research findings into policy and practice is a key element of Cathal’s research activities. In association with his colleagues at the CMRC, Cathal has worked with a range of statutory and non-statutory organisations at local through to international levels, and has drafted advisory documentation on aspects of coastal management. Other areas of research in which Cathal has experience include sustainable tourism in coastal areas, environmental education, marine resource management and the use of remote sensing for marine and coastal management.

Since 2005, he has lectured on the MA Geography course in Coastal Zone Management and GIS, delivered by the Department of Geography in UCC. As part of the MA course he has also supervised the minor theses of a number of students. Cathal is also Managing Editor for the Journal for Nature Conservation, an international and interdisciplinary journal focusing on methods and techniques used by nature conservation practitioners. Cathal is a graduate of University College Cork (B.Sc. in Earth Science) and University College Dublin (M.Sc. (Ag) in Environmental Resource Management).

Research Interests

Integrated Coastal Zone Management, marine spatial planning (MSP), participatory processes, environmental education, indicators, coastal and marine resource management, sustainable tourism.
