Research Profile

Colin Sage

Biography

I have retired as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geography at UCC and now work as an independent scholar based in Portugal. I continue to develop my research interests in food systems, environmental policy and civic initiatives for social change. I am the author of Environment and Food (Routledge, 2012) and co-editor of Food System Transformations (Routledge 2021), Transdisciplinary Perspectives on Transitions to Sustainability (Routledge, 2017),  Food Transgressions: Making sense of contemporary food politics (Routledge, 2014) and Strategies for Sustainable Development (Wiley, 1994). I have published 70 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and delivered more than 100 keynote lectures and conference papers.

I am an honorary Visiting Professor on the Food Studies program at the American University, Rome as well as at the University of Gastronomic Sciences near Turin, Italy (since 2004). I served as External Examiner at City University London - for their world class MSc in Food Policy (2012-17). I am co-editor of the Routledge Critical Food Studies series and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Agricultural Sustainability

I have been Visiting Scholar in the School of Social Sciences, University of Tasmania (2018); a Project ITALY® Action 2: Visiting Scholar at the University of Bergamo (2015) and an Exchange Professor at Colby College, Maine, USA. I was awarded an Irish Research Council Senior Research Fellowship for 2008-09.

As an academic strongly committed to public engagement I co-founded and served as Chair (2013-19) for the Cork Food Policy Council. I am also strongly committed to developing trans-disciplinary conversations around ways of addressing contemporary environmental challenges.

Research Interests

I regard my work as being theoretically informed, socially engaged and policy relevant with an explicit commitment to sustainability and global social justice. Although by training a human geographer I endeavour to work at the boundary between the natural and social sciences and by instinct I relish interdisciplinary collaboration.
The main thrust of my work is preoccupied with the contemporary food system, its social and environmental consequences, and ways of developing healthier, more sustainable and resilient food provisioning alternatives. The main strands of my research and recent outputs are outlined below.

Food, environment and sustainability This strand encompasses several phases over the course of my research career that have involved fieldwork examining farming systems and household livelihood strategies in Bolivia, Indonesia and Mexico, together with more recent desk research focusing upon the production and consumption of food. Sole-authored recent outputs include:
Sage, C (2012) Environment and Food.  New York and Abingdon, UK: Routledge (pp 320).
Sage, C. (2014) Environment and Food: The Author’s Response. Part of a special book symposium, ‘The Ecologies of Food Power’ devoted to an evaluation of Environment & Food.  Sociologia Ruralis 54, 1: 112-115
Sage, C. (2012) ‘Addressing the Faustian Bargain of the Modern Food System: connecting sustainable agriculture with sustainable consumption’. International Journal of Agricultural Sustainability, 10, 3: 204-207.

Food Security Having worked in the field as a consultant responsible for undertaking project evaluations of food security initiatives (in Ethiopia, Pakistan, Central America) I have some understanding of the practical circumstances on the ground.  Today I confine myself to desk research, looking to better understand the ways that food security is tied to other environmental, societal and economic dynamics. Some recent publications include:

Food governance, policy and politics Food governance covers a very wide range of issues, of course, including matters of consumption, quality and food safety. Through my work with small-scale artisan food producers I have become deeply acquainted with the issues faced by this sector, as well as its particular values and ethos. Some recent publications include:

Keohane and P. O'Mahony, eds). Manchester: Manchester University Press, pp.169-202.

Civic initiatives for a sustainable food system This is a new and exciting area of action research in which I am at an early stage, but which will be closely linked to my work with the Cork Food Policy Council. The ambition is to develop this as a laboratory through which to envision, explore and create new possibilities for civic engagement around food. Recent publications:
Sage, C., Dehaene, M., Tornaghi, C. (2016) Urban agriculture practices on the metabolic frontier. In Urban Agriculture Europe (Lohrberg, F. Licka, L., Scazzosi, L., Timpe, A., eds). Berlin: Jovis Publishers, pp.166-181.

Teaching Activities

Teaching Interests

My teaching interests revolve around my research interests as far as possible, ie in the area of food (GG3045 Food Geography), and in the area of environmental policy (GG2040 Geographies of environment & sustainability). I team teach on GG1013 Environmental Geography at first year. I have previously served as Director of the Diploma in Specialty Food Production and contribute to the 'Local food production' module. My teaching philosophy rests upon uncovering students' intrinsic motivation to learn.
