In September 2001, I joined the Computer Science Department of UCC, where I organized the Mobile and Cluster Computing Group (2003). In 2005, I had initiated a new MSc programme on “Software and Systems for Mobile Networks”, which I coordinated from 2005 to 2011. Currently, I’m teaching MSc students and undergrads and I'm conducting research with my group (1 PhD, 3 MSc) on the mobile cloud, mobile middleware, services and protocols.
Students engagement during the lectures and labs is very important, and I stimulate it as much as I can. We are partners and the knowledge and skills transfer can be assessed by the end results. Every student has enrolled to Computer Science for a reason. A student failure is our failure and we need to minimise it by a more customised teaching/learning process.
Biography
I graduated from the Technical University of Iasi (previously known as Politehnica Iasi), Romania, Electrical Engineering Faculty, Automatic Control and Computers course in 1981. Between 1981 and 1987, I worked in industry as computer system engineer. In 1986 and 1987 I was invited researcher with the Basic Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava. Since 1987 I joined the Technical University of Iasi full-time and progressed up to Professorship (2000). I was awarded my PhD in Computer Science by Politehnica University, Bucharest, Romania, in 1994 for the thesis “Dynamic load balancing in large distributed systems”. In May-June 2000, I was Visiting Professor at Lille University.In September 2001, I joined the Computer Science Department of UCC, where I organized the Mobile and Cluster Computing Group (2003). Research Interests
Briefly, mobile cloud, services, middleware, mobile ad-hoc networks, protocols, services and applications for mobile networks, smart city applications.
Since I joined the CS Department of UCC in September 2001, I changed my research area from parallel and distributed computing to mobile networking and computing, and most recently to mobile cloud. I organised a research group, Mobile and Cluster Computing Group, in 2003.
I initiated and coordinated several research streams in the group. The first and probably the most fruitful research stream to date concerns the management of mobile ad-hoc networks. Our original results were published in journals and proceedings of international conferences. The most recent work on this topic regards the management of manet by cloud services. This stream included routing in mobile ad-hoc networks, one extending ABR (Toh) and the other providing a combination of service discovery and routing. Three papers were published as a result.
The second stream dealt with code mobility on mobile ad-hoc networks. One PhD thesis fulfilled this objective. Many results were published in conference proceedings.
The third stream consists of work on a context aware middleware system for the mobile cloud, where the main component is the cloud personal assistant, a service running in the cloud. The overall goal is to increase the experience of the mobile cloud users (general public). To date, 5 conference papers were published and two papers were submitted to journals and are under review.
The most recent stream regards sensing for smart city applications. This research work involves crowdsensing, mobile cloud and smart city applications.
Results of the research work were included in the lecture notes of the Middleware undergrad module.
Another result is the organisation of an MSc programme, "Software and Systems for Mobile Networks", since 2005, which I have coordinated for 6 years.

Teaching Activities
Teaching Interests
Teaching is a major component of my professional activity, and focuses on middleware including for mobile systems, services, protocols and architecture design. Every academic year, I update the content in regards to new concepts, technology developments and applications. I also include research results, many personal, especially in the lectures given to postgraduate students.Students engagement during the lectures and labs is very important, and I stimulate it as much as I can. We are partners and the knowledge and skills transfer can be assessed by the end results. Every student has enrolled to Computer Science for a reason. A student failure is our failure and we need to minimise it by a more customised teaching/learning process.
