Research Profile

Janice Crausaz

BIOGRAPHY

Janice Crausaz first gained a bachelor's degree in Anthropology from George Washington University, Washington, D.C. She subsequently earned a post-graduate diploma on Occupational Therapy (OT) from the University of Pennsylvania. She began working in a rehabilitation hospital for veterans where she initiated an interdisciplinary sexual counselling programme for young spinal cord injured clients. She then was manager of an occupational therapy service in a San Antonio, Texas psychiatric facility unit for adolescents admitted for severely maladaptive behaviour and/or substance abuse.

Subsequently she chose to combine her interest in anthropology and occupational therapy by working as the headmistress of an Anglophone international primary school in Douala, Cameroon, West Africa where she developed a programme for children with an intellectual disability. She then completed a Masters degree at the University of Southern California with a focus on paediatrics and sensory integration. Afterwards she established and directed an OT department in Mafraq Hospital, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates for several years before accepting a position as manager of a large OT/PT clinic in a bi-lingual (French/German) school for children with intellectual and physical disabilities in Fribourg, Switzerland. Following this, she developed an OT programme in a school for children and young adults with intellectual disabilities in Paphos, Cyprus. In 1997 she opened a private paediatric practice while also serving as an OT consultant in adult neurology at the cantonal hospital in Fribourg.

Janice was appointed as a part-time lecturer at UCC in paediatrics and mental health issues for children and young adults in 2005. She is the Association of Occupational Therapist of Ireland (AOTI) delegate to the European Network of Occupational Therapists in Higher Education (ENOTHE) and member of the AOTI international committee. She serves as a co-editor of the student column and a reviewer for the Irish Journal of Occupational Therapy. Other professional affiliations include the American Occupational Therapy Association and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

Research Interests

Janice's interests are in knowledge translation and research utilisation. Her current doctoral research involves developing and assessing an inter-professional post-qualification MSc module on evidence-based practice (EBP). The participatory action research design includes the students as research collaborators. The research aim is to develop multi-faceted teaching and learning strategies which support practicing therapists' engagement in EBP activities. It is hoped that findings from this study will help overcome knowledge translation challenges in the clinical therapies. This study is supported by a grant from the National Academy for Integration of Research, Teaching & Learning.
