Research Profile

Mary Horgan

Biography

Dr Mary Horgan, (BEd, MEd, PhD, HDEA, HDPIP) is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education, University College Cork. Her special interest lies in childhood and early years education, with particular reference to curriculum, voice, identity and rights. Mary played a key role in setting up the BA (Early Childhood Studies) at UCC and in supporting research by students of the Early Years. She has served as Deputy Director/Director of the ECS/EYCS degrees from 1995 to the present and is the current co-ordinator of the Masters in Education Programme. She is also co-ordinator of two of the four modules on the graduate Diploma in Educational Leadership. She has supervised numerous doctoral and masters theses to completion; played a significant role as a patron of OMEP Ireland through conference organisation and editorship of proceedings; served on government committees and as external examiner for several third level institutions. Over several years, she acted as vice-chair of the NCCA Early Years Technical Working Group from which Aistear (2009), the Irish Early Years Curriculum Framework emerged. She is regularly invited to sit on/chair selection panels for academic positions in UCC and other third level institutions. She recently co-authored Loris Malaguzzi and the Reggio Emilia Experience (Bloomsbury, 2010) and has been invited to guest-edit a Special Issue on Irish education policy for an international journal based at the University of Oslo (International Electronic Journal of Elementary Education) She is also working on the theme of voice and identities with two of her doctoral graduates.

Research Interests

My research strategy in recent years has revolved primarily around promoting the area of early childhood care and education through supporting and facilitating research. In particular, I have supervised nine doctoral, and four research masters theses to completion as well as numerous MEd dissertations. Five of these doctoral candidates (one of whom was an IRCHSS scholar) now teach at third level. In addition, I have played a significant role in OMEP Ireland through conference organisation, publication of proceedings and more recently a peer-reviewed journal. As vice-chairperson of the NCCA Early Years Technical Working Group, I allowed my own doctoral research and articles to be used by the group without formal acknowledgement-this has had a significant impact on Early Years policy in this country especially through Aistear. (2009).
