Biography

Professor Tony Ryan is a Consultant Neonatologist at Cork University Maternity Hospital, HSE and an Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics & Child Health at University College Cork. He was one of the first graduates of the Masters in Teaching & Higher Education at UCC. Awards include the Presidents Award for Excellence in Teaching & Learning (2002) and an Irish Health Award (2009) for International Development and Health Systems improvement (Omdurman Maternity Hospital, Sudan). in 2012, he was awarded a National Award by the National Academy for the Integretion of Research in teaching and learning (NAIRTL). 

Research interests include:

• Preventing brain injury in the newborn infant (Collabortors, Professor Ger Boylan, Dr Gene Dempsey).
• Protein composition of breast milk (Collaborator Professor Alan Kelly – Food Science, UCC).
• Probiotics in the newborn (Collaborators, Dr Catherins Stanton, Prof Paul Ross, Teacasc, Cork)
• Interprofessional Education, Reflective Inquiry & Integrated Learning (Partners Dr. Bettie Higgs, Geology, Shane Kilcommins, Law UCC).

Tony has more than 90 peer reviewed research publications and a recent book chapter in the ‘Handbook of Reflection and Reflective Inquiry’ (Ed. Nona Lyons, 2010).

Basic Sciences: Examining new methods of high frequency ventilation effects of MgSO4 on hypoxia induced pulmonary hypertension in piglets.
Clinical Practices: Studies on neonatal Abstinence Syndrome; pulse oximetry ; continuous positive airway pressure in apnea of prematurity1; neonatal pneumothoraces; the effects of PaCO2 and peritoneal dialysis on central hemodynamics in children following open heart surgery; home nebulizers in childhood asthma; thrombolysis; various case reports.   ECMO and congenital diaphragmatic hernias; nitric oxide. Teaching Activities

Teaching Interests

TEACHING HISTORY: I have been teaching since my graduation from U.C.C. in 1977.  This has included didactic lectures, tutorials, grand rounds, bedside teaching, outpatient clinical teaching, presentations and skills sessions.  Students have come from a broad range of backgrounds including medicine (paediatric, obstetrical and anaesthetic junior house doctors), nursing(paediatric, midwivery and public health), respiratory technologists, ambulance and other paramedical specialties.

TEACHING QUALIFICATIONS: Apart from my ‘on the job’ training over the years, I have completed the University of Alberta Teaching course for University staff (TIPP). Other formal teaching seminars include instructor courses for Advanced Trauma Life Support, Paediatric Advanced Life Support and the Neonatal Resuscitation Programme. Small skills groups and skills teaching are emphasized in the latter courses.
Teaching & Learning for Health Professionals: This course is designed for health care professionals of all disciplines, is interactive and learner-centered. Course content includes Adult Learning, Skills Teaching and other aspects of Medical Education.

1.         Undergraduate Medicine:

8 -10 lectures per annum to Med V students (90 students) on newborn medicine, critical care issues, pain relief injury prevention and general paediatrics.
Weekly bedside sessions (2 hours) with Med V students throughout the academic year.
Supervision of approximately paediatric projects per annum by Med VI stude
Supervision and teaching 2-3 Med VI students during clinical clerkships consisting of daily ward rounds, two outpatient clinics per week in addition to other informal sessions
