Research Profile

Chris Williams

Biography

I read Modern History at Balliol College, Oxford, graduating in 1985, before pursuing a doctorate at University College Cardiff under the supervision of Professor Dai Smith (awarded 1991). I was appointed to a lectureship in Nineteenth-Century British History at University of Wales College of Cardiff in 1988 and taught there until 2001. From 2001 to 2004 I was Professor of Modern and Contemporary Wales at the University of Glamorgan, and from 2005 to 2013 Professor of Welsh History at Swansea University. In 2013 I returned to Cardiff University as Professor of History and Head of the School of History, Archaeology and Religion. In 2017 I took up my current appointment as Head of the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences at University College Cork. Currently my research is focused on the history of political cartooning and political caricature in Britain from the French Revolution to the Second World War. I am also working on the social and political history of Newport, South Wales, from the late eighteenth century to the First World War, and I continue to be involved with various projects related to the actor Richard Burton (1925-1984).

Research Interests

Currently my research is focused on the history of political cartooning and political caricature in Britain from the French Revolution to the Second World War. I am also working on the social and political history of Newport, South Wales, from the late eighteenth century to the First World War. Owing to the limitations of the IRIS database system which only recognises a limited number of journal titles, mostly not in the humanities, many of my journal articles are listed here as 'Magazine Articles'. I would like to think most are weightier than the title implies!

Teaching Activities

Teaching Interests

I have taught across a wide subject range at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Currently I am teaching one final year undergraduate course on political cartoons and political caricature in Britain, 1789-1945. I have in the past taught courses on subjects as varied as modern south-east Asian history, modern European history, modern Welsh history, nineteenth-century British history, modern women's and gender history, thematic courses on Celtic histories, on borders and border studies, national identities in the British Isles, popular politics in Britain and on the history of the South Wales coalfield. During my time as an associate lecturer with the Open University I taught on courses examining the history of seventeenth-century England, family and community history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, popular culture, and film and television history.

I have extensive experience as a supervisor of research students from my time at Welsh universities. At Cardiff University I supervised ten students, at Swansea University five students and at the University of Glamorgan one student, all to successful doctorates.
