Research Profile

Keith Sidwell

Biography

I took my BA in Classics at King's College Cambridge in 1969 and my PhD in the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages in 1975 (‘Lucian of Samosata in the Italian Quattrocento’). My earlier career was as a secondary school teacher (Forest School, Snaresbrook, London E11 and Tonbridge Grammar School for Girls, Tonbridge, Kent) and educational writer (JACT Greek Project, Hughes Hall, Cambridge). I moved back into university teaching full-time in 1981 (after teaching during my stay in Cambridge 1975-8 for King's, Christ's and St. Catherine's) in the Department of Classics and Archaeology at the University of Lancaster. In 1985, I moved to the then St. Patrick's College, Maynooth (since 1997 NUI, Maynooth), to be Lecturer in the Department of Ancient Classics. I was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1994 and was Acting Head of Department from 1996-98. I was appointed to the re-established (and renamed) Chair of Latin and Greek at UCC in October 1998, and took early retirement in August 2008. I was appointed Emeritus Professor in 2011.
