Biography
Dr Maxim Kozachenko is a lecturer in Physical Geography in the Department of Geography, University College Cork. He has joined UCC in 2000 initially working as a coastal/marine scientist and specialist in Geographical Information System (GIS) at the Coastal and Marine Research Centre (CMRC). During his career he took part and managed various mapping projects in both marine and terrestrial environments having worked from the Mediterranean to the North Pole with primary focus on Irish environments: e.g. mapping Irish deep-water coral reefs, seabed habitats of the Irish and Celtic Seas. He is familiar with a wide range of survey equipment and specialized data processing software with extensive experience in survey planning, data acquisition, processing, interpretation, integration within GIS and production of the final mapping products. He has developed courses about mapping marine and coastal environments incorporating ship-based training on-board RV Celtic Voyager (Irish National Research Vessel). Currently teaches GG1005 - Physical Geography: An Introduction to the Earth and the Atmosphere; GG2005 - Quaternary Environments; Geomorphology; GG3007 Coastal and Marine Geomorphology; GG6515 Coastal and Marine Survey Techniques.
Research Interests
Recent research activities include production of a series of educational films about Ireland’s coastal and marine environments (http://www.youtube.com/user/GEOCOAST) , mapping offshore bedrock geology of Co. Cork based on INFOMAR seabed mapping data (www.infomar.ie), advising local government on monitoring coastal changes, producing GIS systems for Ireland and wider Atlantic region to assist with development of decision support systems for government agencies and to support on-going research in the area of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM).

IMAGIN (Irish Sea Marine Aggregates Initiative) (2005-2008) project (Total value: €1,330,353) funded under Ireland/Wales INTERREG IIIA Community Initiative Programme 2000-2006. Responsible for planning and undertaking offshore surveys on-board RV Celtic Voyager, processing and analysing data and producing final mapping products, geological report (Kozachenko et al., 2008) and webGIS http://imagin.ucc.ie.
Strategic Environmental Assessment - SEA6, Department of Trade & Industry, UK. This project was undertaken in collaboration with the Irish Petroleum Affairs Division (PAD), Dept. Communication, Marine and Natural Resources (DCMNR) and was focused on the gas-related seabed structures and associated habitats in the western Irish Sea (Croker et al., 2005).
BiblioMara project funded by the Heritage Council of Ireland. The aim of the project was to develop an annotated indexed bibliography of cultural and maritime heritage studies of the coastal zone in Ireland (Kozachenko et al., 2004). The BiblioMara bibliography contains 2964 references to works related to cultural and built heritage, with inclusion of references related to human activities in the coastal zone. The research team engaged in the work on the BiblioMara included: the Coastal & Marine Resources Centre (UCC) (Project Co-ordinators), the Department of Béaloideas (UCC) and Meitheal Mara (Cork). http://bibliomara.ucc.ie/
Large-scale EU projects 5FP ECOMOUND (Environmental Controls on Carbonate Mound Formation along the European margin) and ACES (Atlantic Coral Ecosystem Study) projects. Collection, processing, GIS (Geographical Information System) integration and interpretation of a wide range of remotely sensed (side-scan sonar, multibeam, seismic) and ground-truthing (underwater video, sediment core, box core samples) data followed by production of reports, publications, conference presentations and PhD thesis (Kozachenko, 2005). The main focus was on the mapping of Ireland’s deep-water coral reefs, which are of natural heritage significance.
