David J. Butler

Biography

David J. Butler, an historical geographer by training, is a graduate of The National University of Ireland -  University College Cork (UCC) in history and geography (BA: 1997); he pursued his doctoral studies at the department of Geography, UCC, culminating in 2003 with the award of PhD (N.U.I.), before going on to complete the NUI Diploma in GIS, in 2004.

Butler has held a number of academic research and teaching positions, commencing with a post-doctoral research associate-ship at the UCC Coastal & Marine Resources Centre (CMRC), (2003-04), followed by appointment as HEA (North-South) Post-doctoral Research Fellow, at department of Sociology, UCC (2004-06) and, subsequently, as IRCHSS Post-doctoral Research Associate at the department of history, University of Limerick (2010-11).

He is extensive undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience at third-level institutes across the province of Munster: at the department of history, University of Limerick, as teaching assistant on the MA History of Family (2007-09) and since 2011 as the course director of the Certificate in History of Family and Genealogical Methods (online and on-campus); as a visiting lecturer at the department of religious studies, St Patrick's College of Education, Thurles (2008-09), and particularly as a part-time lecturer at the department of Geography (since 2001) and the Centre for Adult Continuing Education, University College Cork (also since 2001), where he is academic course coordinator of the NUI Diploma in Genealogy (since 2012), which is based in the department of Geography.

Butler's doctoral thesis was published to critical acclaim by Four Courts Press Dublin as South Tipperary, 1570-1841: Religion, Land & Rivalry (2005: hardback, reissued 2007: paperback), which was awarded 'Tipperarania Book of the Year, 2005', 
he has authored or co-edited a further five publications, besides eighteen periodicals or editions, as editor, n recognition of which, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society [FRHistS], in 2006.

The author of twenty-five peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, he has extensive media publication, report and interview experience with forty contributions ranging from regional and national to international. Similarly, he has presented research findings at over thirty national and international conferences, across Europe (Ireland, Britain, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Germany) and America. 

David is the immediate past chair of the Geography of Religions and Belief Systems Specialty Group (GORABS) of the American Association of Geographers (AAG), since 2019, having previously served as chair (2011-13 and 2016-19), immediate past chair (2014-15), secretary (2009-11) and board member (2007-09); he was elected by the Council of the Association of American Geographers to a three year term (2013-16) on their Standing Committee for Archives and Association History.  He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society [FRGS] in 2006.
 
A committed researcher of the history of family, David serves as a board member of The Butler Society (since 2000), and in 2006, was appointed editor of Journal of the Butler Society (est. 1967), since which time he has edited six issues of that triennial periodical. 
He has been a member of the Irish Genealogical Research Society, since 2003 and was appointed editor of its journal, The Irish Genealogist (est. 1937) in 2012. The study of history of family, essentially, the study of the path of human's interaction with their environment over time has been his overarching research concern and, in 2004, Butler was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce [FRSA].

Research Interests

The author of over thirty research papers, David Butler has presented research findings at more than forty national and international conferences, across Europe (Ireland, Britain, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Germany) and America. 


A committed  interdisciplinarian, his research interests encompass the following areas:

  • The political, cultural, historical and religious geography of Ireland since the Reformation; 
  • The Irish Diaspora, and Irish migratory flows;
  • The history of family;
  • Patterns of migration from the European continent to Britain and Ireland and onward to former colonies of the British Empire.;
  • The study of Majority-minority relations, with particular reference to Protestant-Roman Catholic relations;
  • Historical GIS (geographical information systems) and the digital humanities.

Teaching Interests

David Butler's teaching interests are encapsulated by the following themes:
  • The political, cultural, historical and religious geography of Ireland since the Reformation; 
  • The Irish Diaspora, and Irish migratory flows;
  • The history of family;
  • Patterns of migration from the European continent to Britain and Ireland and onward to former colonies of the British Empire.;
  • The study of Majority-minority relations, with particular reference to Protestant-Roman Catholic relations;
  • Historical GIS (geographical information systems) and the digital humanities.
