Theoretically, I am grounded in developmental and sociocultural psychology. I made the principles of action-reflection-action that was central to a series of books “Training for Transformation” a core part of my teaching (and research) philosophy. My teaching is informed by my research from diverse contexts in Ireland and Africa (Sudan, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Uganda, Nigeria).
I am an accredited Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist and this informs my teaching and research practice. I bring this learning to my teaching in qualitative research methodologies – in addition to the technical skills of method and analysis, to incorporate a focus on the relational quality of the work, the relationship that is built up with the participant, the task of entering and leaving the research relationship and the notion of ‘voice’; that of the participant and that of the writer.
As a professional psychologist, I am a member of the Psychology Society of Ireland’s committee on Equality and Inclusive Practice (EQuIP). A core objective of the committee is to bring equality and inclusive practice into mainstream psychology and to embed these principles and practices in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
Biography
Angela Veale (PhD) is Senior Lecturer in the School of Applied Psychology, UCC. She lectures on developmental, sociocultural & critical community psychology and qualitative research methodologies. She is an accredited Child & Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist, registered with the Irish Forum for Child & Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (IFCAPP) and Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP). Her background and expertise includes the psychosocial effects of violence and conflict, post-conflict social reintegration, migration and globalisation and the effects on children, youth and families. In particular, she has an interest in sociocultural psychology, participatory action research (PAR), qualitative and emancipatory research methodologies. She was a visiting professional to the Victim and Witnesses Unit, International Criminal Court and was a Fulbright Scholar to the Program on Forced Migration & Health, Columbia University. She was co-director of a participatory action research project on the social reintegration of young mothers formerly associated with armed forces and groups in Sierra Leone, Liberia and northern Uganda (with Susan McKay, Miranda Worthen & Mike Wessells). The project was cited by the UN Special Representative on Children and Armed Conflict as an exemplar of how to engage children's participation in programming. She was partner to the NORFACE funded Transnational Child-Raising between Europe and Africa (with Valentina Mazzucato and Marzia Grassi). In addition, she received Irish Research Council ‘New Horizons’ funding (with Sarah Robinson & Bessborough Centre) to look at a parent-child intervention. More recently, she conducted research with Concern Worldwide, Lebanon on ‘Engaging Men for Community Resilience’ (with Fiona Shanahan, Alaa Hijazi & Zeina Osman). She is co-director (with Samantha Dockray) of the ‘Intergen’ Project which examines post-conflict intergenerational transmission of resilience. Her research has been funded by Irish Aid, Irish Refugee Council, UNICEF, Oak Foundation, Provictimus, EU, Irish Research Council, and EU. She is a member of the steering committee of the Development Studies Association of Ireland (DSAI). She received a President's Award for Teaching Excellence 2020. Research Interests
As a researcher, I aim to contribute in the space between academic knowledge, policy and practice. I am interested in innovative and mixed research methodologies, in particular working with creative research methods. My research and writing takes a sociocultural and politically situated understanding of the psychological wellbeing of children & families in Ireland and internationally, often using a participatory action research orientation.Major Research Themes
1. Psychology of peace & conflict: post-conflict social reintegration of children & families.
2. Children, Globalisation, Mobility and 'New Migrations'
3. Psychosocial and psychotherapeutic interventions to support children’s psychological wellbeing.

Teaching Interests
The ideas and experiences that influence my teaching are far-ranging. As part of my Ph.D. fieldwork on street children in developing world contexts, I travelled to Brazil and met with a new type of educator, “street educators”; those from the same communities as street children and who went to meet them in the street and teach them there. In meeting with the leaders of this movement, I was introduced to the writings of Paulo Friere and liberation psychology and I have made Participatory Action Research central to my teaching and research.Theoretically, I am grounded in developmental and sociocultural psychology.
