I am a lecturer in Applied Psychology at University College Cork, Ireland, where I am a member of the People and Technology research group. I hold BA and PhD degrees in Psychology from Maynooth University. I worked first as a research assistant, then a lecturer, in the Social Computing Research Centre in the School of Computer Science at the University of Lincoln.

My research expertise lies in the design and evaluation of technology for the purpose of health and wellbeing, education, and behaviour change. I have worked on diverse research projects, investigating the design of educational games, pervasive games, vision therapy programmes, sleep monitors, and online mental health interventions. I am keenly interested in the understanding better the effects of technology on social and psychological processes.

You can find and download all of my publications via my Google Scholar profile: https://scholar.google.co.uk/citations?user=KXZj4J0AAAAJ&hl=en&oi=ao

Research Interests

Human Computer interaction
Interaction Design
Game Design
Serious Games
Gamification
Persuasive Technology

The types of activities that I typically undertake in relation to technology development can be roughly described as:

1)   Identifying and undertaking technology design processes sensitive to, and reflective of, the values of end users and stakeholders;

2)   Designing interventions that thoughtfully implement findings of both design research and psychological research;

3)   Designing novel, challenging and provocative user experiences;

4)   Understanding the role of fiction and speculation in design;

5)   Evaluating technology in a manner that is sensitive to unforeseen social and psychological complexities;

A lot of my research has considered these questions in the context of projects focused on the design of video games, and I have a great interest in understanding how to build consistently engaging games and gamified products and services.
