Research Profile

Biography

I was born in the Netherlands, in Vlaardingen, later moving to Naarden, east of Amsterdam. I have lived in Ireland all my adult life. My early study and work was in the area of publishing, and I worked in publishing houses in the Netherlands and in Ireland. Working as a translator and interpreter allowed me to spend a lot of time with my children while they were young.
My entry into psychology was as a mature student, and my primary degree was followed by a MA in Health Psychology, followed by studies in Psychodynamic and Integrative psychotherapy. During these years I worked part-time for Psychometrica International. I have been working as a psychotherapist in private practice for thirteen years, and as a psychologist in primary care since the beginning of 2005.
My teaching in UCC has been mainly on MA programmes, such as the MCoun, MA in Humanistic Therapy, MA Group Facilitation, MA Counselling Psychology, and the current master programmes, MAAP and MAAP Guidance Counselling. For a number of years I also taught psychology to first year Speech and Language students.
I also have an input in the MA in Art Therapy in Cork.
I enjoy the combination of research and practice, and I love teaching, particularly in the areas of counselling and psychotherapy. For pleasure I read, play the piano and organ, paint, dance, swim, and spend time in my garden.

Research Interests

My overall research interest is in health and coping. This is underpinned by my twin disciplines: psychotherapy and health psychology. An earlier exploration was in the area of gestalt reminiscence therapy research, looking at coping in a cohort of older adult nursing home residents. This led to several publications with Prof. E. O’Leary in peer-reviewed journals. Coping with loss has been the focus of my thesis for the MA Integrative Psychotherapy. The study concerns the lifelong impact of the loss of the father on women bereaved as adolescents. One of the emergent themes dealt with health fears of daughters around the disease that caused their fathers’ deaths, a topic of interest to psychotherapists and health psychologists.
Since working as a counselling psychologist in a primary care team for the past 10 years, my research focus has changed to the contribution of psychology to primary care on the one hand, and the experience of GPs of having access to psychologists on the team.
Additionally, for the past 10
years I have been interested in the barriers and mediators to young men seeking psychological help, when they feel depressed and suicidal.
