Research Profile

Joanne McVeigh

Biography

Dr. Joanne McVeigh is a Lecturer in Applied Psychology and Co-Director of the M.A. Work and Organisational Psychology/Behaviour.  Her work is inter-disciplinary, focusing on the interface between Psychology and Global Health.  Supporting psychosocial well-being, social inclusion, human rights, and organisational justice, particularly for occupational groups at high risk for stress and for marginalised populations, is a core focus of her work.  Her research traverses both humanitarian work psychology and corporate organisational psychology.

Dr. McVeigh holds a PhD from Trinity College Dublin in the area of organisational psychology.  She also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Statistics, a Postgraduate Higher Diploma in Psychology, and B.A. Joint Honours Sociology and Business, from Trinity College Dublin.  She was previously a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Department of Psychology, Maynooth University.   She has published articles in leading psychology and healthcare journals; and has presented at several international conferences in relation to organisational psychology, disability, human rights and social inclusion, across South Africa, Philippines, Sweden, Norway, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.  She has considerable experience working within multi-disciplinary and multi-country research teams, including senior corporate management, senior academics, service-users such as civil society, service-providers, and policy-makers, comprising research meetings across Switzerland, Sudan, France, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.  She is a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society and Psychological Society of Ireland.

Dr. McVeigh was previously the primary researcher for the International Disability Alliance's (IDA) global survey on the participation of disabled people's organisations (DPOs) in governments’ and United Nations' decision-making.  Results of her analyses were presented by the IDA at the Conference of States Parties, United Nations, New York, June 2019.  She was also the primary researcher for a realist synthesis/systematic literature review commissioned by the World Health Organisation, conducted in collaboration with an international research team of governance and rehabilitation experts, on the governance of health-related rehabilitation in less resourced settings.  Her PhD research, funded by Shell Health, explored the psychosocial well-being of maritime workers, and was conducted in the United Kingdom and Philippines.  Her findings, when presented to senior management at Shell Headquarters in London including the Vice President of Health and the General Manager Ship Management, resulted in the revision of Shell Health's resilience programme.  As part of Project EquitAble, she conducted content analyses of Irish and African national health policies, and contributed to development of the EquiFrame manual, a tool for assessing social inclusion and human rights in health policies.  EquiFrame has been used to develop the first Malawian National Health Policy; to guide development of all future Sudanese health policies; and was adopted by UN organisations to promote inclusive development.
