Research Profile

Raegan Murphy

Biography

Dr Raegan Murphy is a chartered Psychologist and associate fellow with the BPS. She currently co-ordinates and lectures Individual Differences, Psychometrics and Psychological assessment. Her interests are the nature of psychological measurement and assessment with an emphasis on item response theory modelling.

Research Interests

My area of interest and research is in the substantive domain of psychometric measurement and modelling (with a focus on item response theory).

My substantive domain is applied in various research contexts including depression, trauma, addiction, gambling, intelligence assessment and psychometric scale construction research. Psychometric techniques can be employed in both quantitative and qualitative research (a consideration often under-appreciated) and I have published across the research spectrum. My insights into measurement have afforded me the understanding to partly get to grips with basic econometrics, socioeconomics and technical financial data. In my spare time, I read up on the history of mathematics with its broad range of applications (think calculus and IRT) into the domain of measurement which ultimately forms the foundation of much of the discipline of psychology. This rather unpopular corner of mainstream psychology hides the engine room of the discipline.

Included in my research are studies in dynamic assessment about which I have written a book (Wiley) and which is an approach which emphasises potential. I have worked on other research projects over the years and these include, among others, work on the Flynn effect, dysgenic trends in intelligence, neuropsychological and intelligence assessment, intimate partner violence, animal welfare workers' stress and female suicide in Ireland. My initial role as a researcher started in the market research industry based in Johannesburg. I practice science and this means that the slow accretion of useful knowledge takes time and patience and a bit of luck. But most importantly, it requires a fervent passion to investigate phenomena.
