My substantive domain is applied in various research contexts including intelligence assessment and psychometric scale construction. Psychometric techniques can be employed in both quantitative and qualitative research - a consideration often under-appreciated - and I have published across the research spectrum. My insights into measurement and data modelling have afforded me an understanding of econometrics, and statistical modelling of data in various domains (aeronautics/engineering/finance). In my spare time, I read up on the history and application of applied mathematics (statistics) with its broad range of applications (think calculus) in the domain of measurement which ultimately forms the foundation of much of the discipline of psychology. This rather unpopular corner of mainstream psychology hides the engine room of the discipline.
Included in my research are studies in dynamic assessment about which I have written a book (Wiley), and is an approach which emphasises learning potential. I have worked on other research projects over the years and these include, among others, work on the Flynn effect, dysgenic trends in intelligence, neuropsychological and intelligence assessment, intimate partner violence, animal welfare workers' stress, female suicide in Ireland and gambling. My initial role as a researcher started in the market research industry based in Johannesburg. I practice science and this means that the slow accretion of useful knowledge takes time and patience and a bit of luck. But most importantly, it requires a fervent passion to investigate phenomena.
