Research Profile

Eleanor Bantry White

Biography

I joined UCC in 2008.  I am a graduate of Oxford University (MPhil, DPhil) and UCC (BSocSc, MSW, PCTLHE) and worked in medical social work before moving into the university setting.

I have a research interest in ageing.  Current projects include a) interventions for social isolation and b) healthy cognitive ageing.  I am also engaged in social work research.

I am a founding member and former coordinator of the interdisciplinary ISS21 Ageing Research Cluster http://www.ucc.ie/en/iss21/clusters/ageing and work with members of this cluster on a range of projects.

I am course director of the PhD Social Work and a coordinator of the MSW programme.  I teach undergraduate and graduate students in the areas of a) research methods, b) social work and c) ageing.

Research Interests

I have an interest in ageing issues.  Current projects reflect the themes of a) interventions for social isolation and b) healthy cognitive ageing.  With colleagues from Applied Psychology, the Outdoor Lived Environment as 'Brain Training' project investigates how neighbourhood can support cognitive health in later life.  Building on previous work on community responses to loneliness experienced by older people, I have also begun to examine the role of ICT interventions for social isolation and loneliness in later life, specifically examining the ethical issues and underlying constructs of ageing within ICT design and usage. This builds on former work on electronic monitoring which developed my interest in ethics, technology and ageing.  For project updates, see www.researchgate.net/profile/Eleanor_Bantry_White

Methodologically, I have experience of both qualitative and quantitative methods and of conducting primary and secondary research.  I am interested in developing innovative methods of data collection and am currently carrying out qualitative walking interviews.

I have held national and international grants as principal investigator and as a collaborator.  I am on the editorial board of  two leading international journals, Research on Social Work Practice and Journal of Evidence-Informed Social Work and peer review for various other journals in the social and health sciences.

Former projects have researched assessment and interventions to support people living with dementia to walkabout safely outdoors, electronic monitoring, and age-related food poverty.  I also have an interest in social work and social work education and have recently published on professional education and safeguarding.
