Research Profile

Joseph Finnerty

Biography

I have taught on a number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the School of Applied Social Studies since 1999. Reflecting some of my research interests and community engagement, this teaching has covered topics in housing and homelessness, social indicators and poverty measurement, and survey methods.
I have also researched in the area of young carers in Cork and teenage drug users in Waterford.

In the housing and homelessness area, I am one of the coordinators of the Welfare Policy, Homelessness and Social Exclusion working group in the European Network of Housing Researchers
 http://www.enhr.net/welfarepolicy.php

I have acted as referee for the journals Housing Studies, Housing Policy Debate, The European Journal of Homelessness, Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine, Journal of Co-operative Studies and the Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies, and as rapporteur for the Economic and Social Research Council (UK).

For many years, I served on the board of Cork Simon, a NGO providing services to, and lobbying for progressive policy changes re homeless persons.

I am currently a member of the Homeless Sub-Group of the Children and Young People's Services Commitee Cork  (formerlyy the Cork-Kerry Youth out of Home Forum) which serves as an exchange of ideas and for advocacy in relation to services for young out of home persons, and for homeless accompanied children, in the Cork region.

Research Interests

My current research interests are in the areas of entries into and exits from homelessness, precarity in the private rental sector, housing tenure trajectories, and the role of indicators in anti-poverty policy.
