Kenneth Burns

Biography

Kenneth Burns is a senior lecturer, Deputy Director of the Master of Social Work course and Director of Practise (social work) at University College Cork. He has worked as a social worker and social work team leader in child protection and welfare and continues to support practice in this area. His main research and teaching interests are in child protection policy and practice, staff retention, career pathways for newly-qualified social workers, child care proceedings in the District Court / child welfare removal systems, professional supervision and community-based research. Kenneth is a founding member of: the National Child Protection and Welfare National Conference; Community Academic Research Links (CARL) - UCC's community-based research initiative; Practice Links - a university-practice knowledge exchange initiative; a European network of academics and researchers examining child protection removals, and the Social Work Development Unit (UCC). Kenneth is a research associate with the Institute for Social Sciences in the 21st Century (ISS21) and a research collaborator on the European Research Council 'DISCRETION' project at the Centre for Research on Discretion and Paternalism, Bergen University, Norway. Kenneth is the Principal Investigator for two ongoing Irish research studies, he has participated on three EU-funded studies and co-ordinated the IDEA project which was co-funded by European Union DG Justice and Consumer Affairs. Kenneth was twice awarded the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Kenneth was the Principal Investigator of an interdisciplinary research team that won the UCC Research Team of the Year Award. Kenneth was also awarded the UCC CARL Research Supervisor of the Year. Kenneth is a registered social worker with the Health and Social Care Professionals Council, CORU, Ireland – registration number SW003803.
