BIOGRAPHY

BSW (Athens), MSOCSC (National University of Ireland Cork), NQSW

Main Research Interests:

Mental health innovations; recovery oriented practice; alternatives beyond psychiatry;mental health education; citizenship and social exclusion; social work education.

Teaching Areas:
Mental health (social policy and social work); disability; social work theory.

Research Interests

My key research interests are in the area of critical mental health theory, policy and practice. I am particularly interested in recovery-oriented practice; alternatives beyond psychopharmacology as a key responce to human distress; community development and user-involvement in mental health.

This work is built on my existing and ongoing work in the field of mental health. Examples of this work include joined research activities with European partners; research and publications in the area of mental health recovery; conference contributions and conference organisation; as well development of/participation in social action initiatives such as the Irish Network for Critical Voices in Mental Health.

I am commited in promoting user-centred approaches in research and education. To this end, I am particularly interested in research methodologies promoting user-defined outcomes in evaluating mental health services and practice. I have been involved in evaluating two innovative projects in the areas of assertive outreach (Home Focus project) and supported housing (Sli Eile Housing Association). I am currently involved in further research in the area of mental health and arts.

I also am a research associate with the Institute for Social Science in the 21st Century (ISS21), and a member of the Educating for the Professions cluster.
