Elizabeth Kiely

Biography

My research and teaching interests include social policy, particularly youth policy and practice, penal policy and feminist social policy. I also teach modules in research methodology.  I was awarded a Government of Ireland Senior Research Scholarship in 2002 to complete my PhD.  With Dr. Máire Leane I have undertaken an oral history project on women's work in Munster in the 1940s and 1950s, which was funded by the HEA and which has generated am on-line multi-media oral archive housed in the Digital Repository of Ireland https://www.dri.ie/irish-women-work-oral-history-project-published-dri and added to Europeana.  Co-authored and co-edited books include 'Youth and Community Work in Ireland: Critical Perspectives (2009, Blackhall) 'Irish Women at Work 1930-1960, An Oral History'  (2012 Irish Academic Press); 'Sexualities and Irish Society' 2014, Orpen Press); The Criminalisation of Social Policy in Neoliberal Societies (November 2021, Bristol University Press).  Recent research projects / activities include an IRC funded study of fathers views and experiences of supervised child parent contact and a study of single fathers perceptions of the facilitators and obstacles to shared parenting in the Irish context (for Treoir and funded by the Community Foundation for Ireland) and the ESRC / IRC Research Network RIFNET: Reconstituting Irish Families.  I was chair of the University's Ethics Committee (2019-2022) and I am an academic /research member of the Child & Family Agency (CFA /Tusla) National Research Ethics Committee. I am co-chair of the Board of Women's Studies and I am presently the Oral History Network of Ireland's Education Officer.
