Research Profile

Joseph Finnerty

Biography

I have taught on a number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the School of Applied Social Studies since 1999. Reflecting some of my research interests and community engagement, this teaching has covered topics in housing and homelessness, social indicators and poverty measurement, and survey methods.
I have also researched in the area of young carers in Cork and teenage drug users in Waterford.

In the housing and homelessness area, I am one of the coordinators of the Welfare Policy, Homelessness and Social Exclusion working group in the European Network of Housing Researchers
 http://www.enhr.net/welfarepolicy.php

I have acted as referee for the journal Housing Studies, and as rapporteur for the Economic and Social Research Council (UK).

I serve as the Ireland national research adviser to the European Observatory on Homelessness
http://eohw.horus.be/code/EN/pg.asp?Page=978

For many years, I served on the board of Cork Simon, a NGO providing services to, and lobbying for progressive policy changes re homeless persons.

I am currently a member of the Cork Youth out of Home Forum, which serves as an exchange of ideas in relation to services for young out of home persons in the Cork and Kerry region.

Research Interests

My research strategy principally involves developing a comparative perspective on Irish homelessness through enhancing links with European and North American researchers, particularly via the Welfare Policy, Homelessness and Social Exclusion workshop in the European Network of Housing Researchers (ENHR), (of which I am joint co-ordinator), via FEANTSA (for whom I am national reporter for the Republic of Ireland), and through links with the Canadian Homelessness Research Network, based in York University in Canada.

My strategy also involves evaluating the impact of social housing policy and provision in Ireland, and analysing the changing nature of social housing in tandem with the modernisation of the Irish private rented sector, in particular the attitudes, behaviour and profile of private landlords.

Impacts on discipline

My research on homelessness has contributed to developing a deeper understanding of Irish homelessness via locating it a broader comparative framework. Private landlordism is a little-researched area in Irish housing studies, and my research in this area will enhance our understanding of the limits and opportunities of this sector in meeting housing need.
