Rosaleen Murphy

I have a wide experience of educational research and practice, ranging from early childhood to post-graduate and initial teacher education. My initial qualifications were a B.A and a Higher Diploma in Education from University College Cork. I worked in primary schools and in early childhood settings before returning to UCC as a mature student on the first B.A. in Early Childhood Studies. My PhD (UCC, 2001), supervised by Prof Francis Douglas, was on the topic of parental involvement in early years education and care. In 2003, I was awarded an IRCHSS  Government of Ireland Post-doctoral Research Fellowship, and  from 2003-2005, I continued to work on the topic of partnership between parents and early years educators. Subsequently, I was part of the team developing Aistear, the Early Childhood Curriculum Framework for the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment. In 2007, I returned to the School of Education as a researcher, and have been involved  with several major externally funded research projects on initial teacher education, both policy and practice, including the LETS study (2011) (see under Publications for more). I also continue to work with the NCCA early childhood team on developing support materials for Aistear. From 2007 to 2012, I was sole editor of An Leanbh Óg, the OMEP Ireland Journal of Early Childhood Studies, a peer-reviewed publication, published annually by the Irish committee of OMEP, the World Early Childhood Organisation . From 2013 onwards, I co-edit this journal, the tenth issue being published in 2016.

Research Interests

My major research interests are early childhood education and care, and initial teacher education. I have participated in several major studies on initial teacher education, both policy and practice (see publications list). I maintain an on-going involvement with research into early childhood education, including curriculum development (as part of the NCCA team that developed Aistear, the national early childhood curriculum framework), transition from preschool to primary school, partnership between parents and early childhood practitioners, Reggio Emilia, and research methodology in early childhood settings.  From 2007 to 2012, I was sole editor of An Leanbh Óg, the OMEP Ireland Journal of Early Childhood Studies (Vols 1 to 6), a peer-reviewed journal, published annually. From 2013 onwards (Vols. 7, 8, 9 and 10), I have been co-editor of this journal.
