Tá an Dr T.J. Ó Ceallaigh mar Léachtóir Sinsearach/Ollamh Comhlach i Scoil an Oideachais, Coláiste na hOllscoile Corcaigh. An phríomhspéis taighde atá aige is ea díriú ar an oideolaíocht atá ag teastáil chun teagasc na teanga agus an ábhair agus an measúnú a chomhtháthú go rathúil, go háirithe i gcomhthéacsanna tumoideachais agus dátheangacha. I measc na bhfoilseachán is déanaí leis, cuimsítear ailt in International Journal of Bilingualism and Bilingual Education, Journal of Immersion and Content-Based Language Education, agus Educational Management, Administration and Leadership, agus bhí sé ar dhuine de na heagarthóirí freisin ar imleabhar maidir leis an bhforbairt múinteoirí le haghaidh an tumoideachais agus an teagaisc ábharbhunaithe (Benjamins, 2020). I rith a théarma oifige cúig bliana, cabhróidh sé leis an gCoimisiún chun tacú le tíortha chun athchóirithe beartas a chur chun feidhme i gcomhréir leis an bPlean Gníomhaíochta don Oideachas Digiteach, 2021-2027. Díreoidh sé go háirithe ar oideachas digiteach ardchaighdeáin agus uilechuimsitheach a chothú san Eoraip, agus cuirfidh sé san áireamh freisin an claochlú digiteach agus impleachtaí ghéarchéim COVID‑19 agus na ceachtanna a foghlaimíodh ón ngéarchéim. Tá T.J. ina bhall den Chomhairle Riaracháin Thofa le Cumann Oideoirí Múinteoirí san Eoraip (ATEE) agus tá sé ina chomhchathaoirleach ar an bPobal Taighde agus Forbartha maidir le hOideachas Múinteoirí agus an Teicneolaíocht Dhigiteach, fóram dinimiciúil idirdhisciplíneach atá ann a bhfuil mar aidhm leis an léann criticiúil agus comhfhiontair thaighde a chothú chun an dioscúrsa poiblí agus an cleachtas i réimse an oideachais dhigitigh a mhúnlú. Ina theannta sin, tá sé mar Stiúrthóir Boird de Chomhtháthú Teanga agus Ábhair san Ardoideachas (ICLHE), cumann idirnáisiúnta scoláirí a bhfuil spéis acu i réimse ildisciplíneach an chomhtháthaithe ábhair agus teanga san ardoideachas agus a bhíonn ag cur leis an réimse sin ar bhealach gníomhach.
 
Dr. T.J. Ó Ceallaigh is a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor at the School of Education, University College Cork, Ireland. His main research interests focus on the pedagogy required for the successful integration of language and content instruction and assessment, with particular reference to language immersion and bilingual contexts. Recent publications include articles in the International Journal of Bilingualism and Bilingual Education, Journal of Immersion and Content-Based Language Education, Educational Management, Administration and Leadership as well as a co-edited volume on teacher development for immersion and content-based instruction (Benjamins, 2020). T.J. participates actively in Irish and international immersion communities, serves as a consultant to immersion programmes, speaks regularly at conferences and is an active member of a number of research collaborations on a national and international scale. T.J. was recently appointed to the European Commission Working Group on Digital Education: Learning, Teaching and Assessment (DELTA). During his five year term of office, he will assist the Commission in supporting countries with the implementation of policy reforms in line with the Digital Education Action Plan 2021-2027, focusing in particular on fostering high quality and inclusive digital education in Europe, while taking into consideration the digital transformation as well as the implications and lessons learnt from the COVID-19 crisis. T.J. is a member of the Administrative Council of the Association for Teacher Educators in Europe (ATEE) and is co-chair of the ATEE Teacher Education and Digital Technology Research and Development Community, a dynamic interdisciplinary forum aimed at fostering critical scholarship and research collaborations to shape public discourse and practice in the area of digital education. He is also a Board Director of Integrating Language and Content in Higher Education (ICLHE), an international association of scholars who are interested in and actively contribute to the multi-disciplinary field of content and language integration in higher education.



Research Interests

Leadership and teacher development for immersion education

As a former immersion teacher and principal, Dr Ó Ceallaigh has always been convinced that teaching language through content is the most effective approach to teaching second language, and there is ample research evidence to support that conviction. His primary research interest focuses on the role of the instructional leader and on the pedagogy required for the successful integration of language and content instruction, particularly in immersion contexts, where an indigenous language (e.g., Irish) is used as the vehicle for teaching academic subject matter. Particular topics of research interest include:
  • Teacher education and development for immersion, bi- and multilingual contexts
  • Form-focused instruction in immersion
  • Context-appropriate crosslinguistic pedagogy
  • Teacher language awareness in immersion
  • Content and language integrated instruction

Transformative digital pedagogies

Dr Ó Ceallaigh has a particular expertise in the integration of digital technologies within teaching and learning to allow pedagogy and technology to support each other in a blended learning design. He continues to explore and research highly innovative and complex digital technologies to develop novel pedagogical approaches in blended learning design, more recently by the integration of Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CERFL) practices in hyflex postgraduate programmes in education. Particular topics of research interest include:
