My role is not in Primary Research but to support research in a number of practical ways. My position in this respect is comparable to that of instructor in Freshman Composition in the United States system. Through the School of English and the CACSSS, I provide specialised courses in Writing Skills to various departments and faculties. I also offer Thesis Presentation sessions to MA students in Geography and MSc students in Occupational Therapy.

  • I have devised and supply specific courses in Business Communication for Second Commerce students, First Food Business students and First Government and Public Policy students.
  • This links to my work in the Community as a past consultant in Business Communication with The Cork Enterprise Board, and my work with pharmaceutical industries in the Cork Harbour area.
  • I have been a regular theatre reviewer for RTE Radio 1 Arts show.

I travel to Dublin three times a year to lecture to incoming American students to Cork in The Arcadia University Programme. I also act as liaison officer for these students during their time at UCC.

I co-founded and edited a national literary magazine, Stet, 1988-1993.  This bi-monthly journal published new writing, both fiction and poetry, of many prominent Irish writers.  Among the writers were Seamus Heaney, Medbh McGuckian and John Montague.  It also published reviews and academic essays.
