Research Profile

Maeve Conrick

BIOGRAPHY

I currently hold the posts of Dean of Arts, Vice Head of the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences and Head of the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. A graduate of UCC, I was awarded a Swiss Government Scholarship for postgraduate study at the Université de Neuchâtel, Switzerland. The award of the Travelling Studentship of the National University of Ireland in French led to a period of three years doctoral studies at the Université Aix-Marseille 1, where I obtained a doctorate in General and Applied Linguistics, under the direction of Professor Georges Mounin. Currently, I am Chair of the Royal Irish Academy Committee on Modern Language, Literary and Cultural Studies, President of the Association for Canadian Studies in Ireland and a member of the Board of Directors of the Association internationale des etudes quebecoises. In 2009, I was appointed as Specialist Advisor on Language Policy to a UK House of Commons Committee. I am a past Treasurer of the European Second Language Association and a past member of the Executive Committee of the British Association for Applied Linguistics. I served for three years as a member of the Ottawa-based International Council for Canadian Studies Adjudication Committee, which assesses international research funding applications submitted under a large number of programmes offered by the ICCS and the Government of Canada. For various periods, I was Director of UCC's MA in Applied Linguistics programme, which I established as an interdepartmental programme (with the Department of English) in 1993.  I am currently Director of the MA French Linguistics.

Research Interests

My current research work builds on and extends my previous published work, focusing on a range of areas in Linguistics, Sociolinguistics and Applied Linguistics: French Language and Linguistics, Language Policy, Language and Gender (French and English), the acquisition of French and English as second languages, Canadian Studies and Quebec Studies.
