Martin Howard

Biography

While I am based in the French Department, I currently serve as Associate Dean (Global) in the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences. I have previously served as Head of Department and Head of School of Languages, Literatures & Cultures.
My teaching and research focus on second language acquisition, sociolinguistics and study abroad, especially in relation to French. I served as founding editor of the journal, Study Abroad Research in Second Language Acquisition (John Benjamins) in 2016-2021, and was Chair of the European COST Action, Study Abroad Research in European Perspective (SAREP) in 2016-2020. I am currently President of the Association for French Language Studies.
