Research Profile

Caitríona Ní Dhúill

Biography

Caitríona Ní Dhúill is Professor in German at the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures, UCC. Her research areas are German, Austrian and comparative literature from the late nineteenth century to the present day; utopian fiction and theory; gender theory; life writing and biography; ecocriticism, environmental humanities and literature in the Anthropocene. Her most recent book, Metabiography: Reflecting on Biography (Palgrave 2020) explores the contradictions of biography, charting shifts in approach to the writing and reading of biographies since the Enlightenment. Her first book, Sex in Imagined Spaces: Gender and Utopia from More to Bloch (Legenda 2010) offers a critical account of the relationship between gender discourse and utopian thought. Professor Ní Dhúill has also published widely in the fields of modern German and Austrian literature and thought, with articles and essays on Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Ingeborg Bachmann, Frank Wedekind, Ilija Trojanow, Ernst Bloch, Rainer Maria Rilke and others. She co-edited a special issue of Poetics Today on negative and dystopian futures in 2016, and is general editor (with Deborah Holmes) of the peer-reviewed yearbook Austrian Studies. Her current research on the literary Anthropocene explores emerging literary discourses on ecological destabilisation, from dystopian and apocalyptic fiction to lyric engagement with disrupted landscapes. Drawing on ecocritical theory and interdisciplinary work in the environmental humanities, this research aims to contribute to a new assessment of the significance, scope and stakes of literary and cultural studies in the Anthropocene. Forthcoming publications in this area include a dedicated special issue of Austrian Studies on ‘Anthropocene Austria’ (2022).Since completing her PhD in Germanic Studies at Trinity College Dublin in 2005, Professor Ní Dhúill has taught German language and literature at the universities of St Andrews (2004), Vienna (2006-09) and Durham, UK (2009-19). From 2005-2009, she was a full-time postdoctoral researcher at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for the History and Theory of Biography, Vienna. She was Käthe Leichter Guest Professor in Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Vienna in 2016 and Fellow of the Durham Institute of Advanced Study in 2013. She is now an international affiliate of the Centre for Culture and Ecology, Durham, which she founded in 2017, a member of the Arbeitskreis Kulturanalyse Wien (Vienna School of Cultural Analysis), and an affiliate of UCC's Environmental Research Institute.
