Biography
Dr Doyle O' Neill is a broadcast historian. She was the first UCC graduate to receive a Doctorate in Ireland's radio and television history. She lectures in the area of Ireland's broadcast and film history- as well as in the area of Crime and the Media- as part of the BA in Criminology. She is author of The Gaybo Revolution: How Gay Byrne Challenged Irish Society, which is currently a recommended text for the Leaving Certificate History curriculum as part of its coverage of the Impact of RTÉ 1962-1972. She is a regular commentator on radio and on television on issues relating to Ireland's broadcasting history and her contributions to date, include comments on regulations pertaining to Ireland's broadcasting laws for children and newspaper governance in Ireland. One of her more pioneering conferences, includes a celebration of 50 years of television in Ireland, co-sponsored by the School of History UCC and RTÉ. The conference was streamed live world-wide. Moreover, Dr Doyle O'Neill has also organised a unique conference at the Radio Museum at Cork city Gaol on the topic of BBC Radio's first broadcast in Northern Ireland in 1924. In December 2018, to celebrate 100 years of women's suffrage, she co-ordinated a unique parade of women throughout the ages in the Quad at UCC, lead by Mrs Sabina Higgins and followed by a symposium on the role of women in Ireland today. Dr Doyle O'Neill is a Board member of the Cork Film Festival, as well as being an active committee member of IFUT. She is also a member of The Women's History Association, the National Union of Journalists, as well as being a patron of the UCC Journalism Society. She has also written an historical play on the women of 1916, called Walking with Ireland into the Sun, which was performed throughout Munster during 1916/17 . She has also written an award winning radio series, The Road to the Vote: The fight for female suffrage in Ireland, which is currently available on the Oireachtas website in Dail Éireann. Walking with Ireland into the Sun- an original play by Finola Doyle O' Neill In April 2016 I wrote and directed a play on seven women insurgents of 1916. The play, which was based on primary archival material, was called Walking with Ireland into the Sun ( a line from Helena Molony's military testimony). The play was performed at the former women's gaol at Sundays well in Cork by The UCC Players, the staff drama group which I founded in 2014. The play was invited back to the gaol for Culture Night 2016 and the playwright and cast have also had requests to re-stage it nationwide. | |
