Biography
I am a graduate of UCC. I obtained my MA by independent research in 1994 and my PhD by a similar process in 2006. My publications include four books, The Pipe Roll of Cloyne: Rotulus Pipae Clonensis (co-edited with Kenneth Nicholls: 1996), Colmán of Cloyne: a Study (2004), Medieval Ireland: territorial, political and economic divisions (2008), and A History of the Medieval Diocese of Cloyne (2013). I began my career as an independent scholar in the early 1990s with a particular interest in the Anglo-Norman period in Ireland. I have published on a number of varied research interests, reflecting my development as a researcher over a number of years. From the Anglo-Norman period I moved on to its antecedents in the preceding 'High-Gaelic' period, and, more recently, to the subject area of the diachronic development of areal or spatial units in medieval Ireland and Europe generally, including parish, townland, tricha cet, barony, manor, rural deanery, tuath and diocese. This area of study has largely been ignored by modern scholarship.
I have been a researcher with the School of History since completing my PhD, working on the above areas. In 2010 I won a IRCHSS post-doctoral scholarship for a project entitled 'Medieval Ireland: the lands of the Church'. This has resulted in the publication of four peer reviewed papers to date, with another, on the origins of the parish in Ireland, forthcoming. This project will result in a monograph once completed.
During the period 2008 to 2010 I was employed as historical consultant with the Heritage Council funded Making Christian Landscapes project, hosted by the School of Archaeology in UCC. This involved working on a number of major reconstructions of pre-Norman civic divisions of landscape organization in various parts of Ireland. The project will produce a substantial monograph, currently in preparation, which will include three large chapters of mine. This involvement reflects my continuing interest in promoting a joint approach between historians and archaeologists in the area of early medieval landscape organization.
Research Interests
MacCotters research interests began with historical, governmental and genealogical aspects of the Anglo-Norman period in Ireland. Over time this developed into curiosity about the indigenous Irish antecedents of much of the social and political structures of Anglo-Norman Ireland, and this in turn led to an interest in the diachronic development of all spatial or areal divisions of medieval Ireland. These include the political divisions of kingdom and lordship, the administrative cum economic divisions of túath, baile, trícha cét, county, cantred, feudal barony, administrative barony, manor, knights fee, villate, vill, townland and civil parish, and the ecclesiastical divisions of paruchia, diocese, rural deanery, rural rectory, church estate, colonial rectory, vicarage and parish. MacCotter's book, Medieval Ireland: territorial, political and economic divisions (2008), in which he deals exhaustively with the origin and descent of several of the above units, has been warmly welcomed by reviewers.
This research progression has been reflected in MacCotter's move from the status of independent scholar to that of senior historical research fellow with the INSTAR funded 'Making Christian Landscapes' project of the School of Archaeology in UCC, a post he held between 2008-10. Here MacCotter provided detailed historical analysis of the medieval and early-modern secular, ecclesiastical and estate history of two key geographical areas of the study, the Corca Dhuibhne and Uíbh Ráthach peninsulas of Kerry and the Co. Kildare barony of Connell. MacCotter has also carried out a detailed study of the Munster kingdom of Fir Maige as outlined in the topographical tract, Críchad an Chaoilli, in which he has studied its political, ecclesiastical and estate/túath history. This was published in 2014. The results of these INSTAR-funded studies are the subject of a forthcoming work.
MacCotter held an IRCHSS fellowship in his host institution at the School of History, UCC, between 2010 to 2012. This involved a study of the lands, estates and temporalities of the medieval Irish Church from the earliest period down to the period of the Anglo-Norman Church. This ambitious project, as yet unfinished, will see church-lands studied via sources such as hagiography, toponymy, cult distribution, ecclesiastical and secular law, land records, and archaeology. Additionally, the study is focusing on related aspects, such as the provision of pastoral care and the origin of the parish system.
