Research Interests

Irish industrial history 1801-1921. The Irish Diaspora. The Irish and the British Empire. Irish economic history since Independence. Actively researching and publishing in the field of Irish economic and social history since 1986. Specialist field is the history of Irish industry during the Union; most important publications to date have been on this subject, most notably recently published 2009 monograph Ireland and the Industrial revolutionI have also edited three books, which have brought together contributions and original research by leading scholars in several areas. One of these books, The Irish Diaspora (which includes a chapter on my own research on Irish emigration to the British Empire) became a major teaching and research text in both history programmes and in the interdisciplinary field of migration studies. The book has been reviewed by eminent historians in leading international journals (for example, reviews have appeared in the American Historical Review (by David Fitzpatrick), the English Historical Review (by Ewen A. Cameron), the Institute of Historical Research (by Donald MacRaild) the Irish Journal of Sociology (by John Jackson), the Economic History Review (by Roger Swift). This book has also been cited widely cited in the discipline; (see for example Kevin Kenny Ireland and the British Empire (Oxford, 2004). I have also just completed an academic journal article on Protestant emigration from the south of Ireland during the War of Independence and the Civil War, in response to the on going heated debate on this topic in the media. Currently researching and writing a jointly authored textbook with Dr. Raymond Ryan, which examines the role of the state in Irish economic history from independence down to the current economic downturn. The research for this survey, which will be published by Routledge, Has been funded by PRTLI.

Cooley Distilleries
My first job as a historian was to write the history of Lockes distillery in Kilbeggan, Co Westmeath. Over two years i did detailed research on the surviving records of this distillery held in the Naitonal Library and at Kilbeggan. I also carried out many oral history interviews in the locality, inlcuding some ex-employees of the distillery and some members of the Locke family. The work was published and a measure of its success is that a new edition was recently published.
