Educated in UCC, I completed my PhD in 2010 before moving to the Clinton Institute for American Studies, UCD, as a Post-Doctoral Fellow.  I returned to UCC in 2011, taking up a post as Lecturer in International Politics.

In 2013, I published my first monograph with Stanford University Press, Learning to Forget: US Army Counterinsurgency Doctrine and Practice from Vietnam to Iraq, which was a finalist for the Society of Military History’s Edward M. Coffman prize.  In 2014, I published my second book, Obama, US Foreign Policy and the Dilemmas of Intervention, a co-authored text written with Professor David Ryan that is one of the first works to explore Obama's decision-making in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Syria.  My current research focuses on consequences of the All-Volunteer Force for American society and the rise of a ‘warrior ethos’ within the post-Vietnam US military.

I am actively involved in developing online learning at UCC, and have received several small teaching grants to facilitate the development of blended learning classes.  I am currently the director of the new online MA in Strategic Studies.   I serve on the University's e-learning subcommittee, as well as the Digital Arts and Humanities Board of Studies.  I also serve as co-ordinator of the MA Politics, sit on the Board of Studies for the Politics programme and am Secretary to the School of History's Graduate Studies Committee.

Research Interests

My research interests include US foreign policy, the history of counterinsurgency warfare and cultural history - specifically the relationship between the US military and American society and culture. My work also deals with the intersections of history and memory as well as the ways in which societies and institutions construct usable pasts.

My main current research project focuses on the consequences of the All-Volunteer Force for American society and the rise of a 'warrior ethos' within the US Army.  It will explore how a conscript-based Army designed to fight the Cold War gave way to an all-professional force oriented towards 'expeditionary' operations. While the research is in its early stages, it will eventually take the form of a full-length monograph.

Other current research projects include an article on the British influence on American counterinsurgency doctrine, a study of the Gulf War homecoming parades of 1991, an edited volume on counterinsurgency, and a co-authored monograph on the Obama administration and military intervention.
