First person to receive a doctorate in History and Civilisation from European University Institute, Florence; Fulbright Professor in California, 1983; Woodrow Wilson Fellow, Washington DC, 1988; Visiting Professor, History Department, Cornell University, 1989; Guest Scholar, Woodrow Wilson Center, 1991. Arts Faculty Research Merit award 1999.

Research Interests
European, North American, and Latin American diplomatic and political history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; contemporary international relations; human rights and foreign policy formulation; administrative history and the decision-making process; study of post-World War II European integration; trade union and labour history; religion and popular politics; church/state relations; the history of the Vatican. Irish specialist interests: politics and society from the eighteenth to the twentieth century; issues of church and state; popular religion; devotional practices and the churches; diocesan and parish history; episcopal decision-making; emigration and the Irish abroad; the rise of Irish trade unionism and the history of the Irish labour movement; the development of Irish diplomacy and foreign policy; the senior civil service and the evolution of Irish administrative culture; the state and culture--the visual arts, theatre, and cinema in Ireland.Publications
