Mervyn O'Driscoll

Biography

Modern and contemporary international, strategic and nuclear history.

Published in the fields of Anglo-French-American nuclear diplomacy and NATO politics, European nuclear cooperation, and Irish foreign policy and diplomacy. Additional interests include 20th-century Europe, European integration, nuclear history, the Cold War, the Anglo-American 'Special Relationship' and Anglo-French relations.

Participates in several professional and academic associations. Former vice-chair and then chair of the Royal Irish Academy’s International Affairs Standing Committee and a member of the Advisory Committee on the Dictionary of Irish Biography (Cambridge University Press). Membership of several editorial and advisory boards (see journal activities). Current editor of Irish Studies in International Affairs. Formely sole investigator or member of various consortia, with a track record of research funding from a variety of external sources including the Irish Research Council, the European Parliament, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, National University of Ireland, PRTLI, HEA North-South Research Programme etc.  He has supervised four IRC Government of Ireland PhD Scholars and mentored one IRC Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellow. In sum, Mervyn has supervised 9 Ph.D.s to successful completion, 2 MPhils and approximately 200 MAs. 

Contributes to various cognate programmes: European Studies, History, Politics, Strategic Studies and International Relations. Extensive leadership experience at programme and curriculum levels: at various times Director of the MA in International Relations (History), MA in History, MA in Strategic Studies, BA European Studies, History, and BA and MA Politics. Regularly delivers invited papers on his specialisms at national and international conferences, including keynotes, throughout Ireland, the UK, Europe, Asia and the US. 

Record of regular service on School, College, University and national committees. Formerly,  Associate Dean of Graduate Studies (CACSSS), Head of School, and Director of several academic programmes.

Research Interests

Modern Irish political history, especially Irish diplomacy and foreign policy. A focus on European relations, neutrality, small state diplomacy and European integration.

Nuclear history and politics and strategy (national programmes of America, Britain, and France; Ireland and the Non-Proliferation Treaty; Euratom - European Atomic Energy Community)

Anglo-French-American diplomacy in the fields of defence, nuclear weapons and European integration during the Cold War

Occasioned by publication of co-authored chapter, ‘Ireland’s military engagement in Spain and hispano-irish military coope­ration in the twentieth and twenty first centuries’ in Hugo O’Donnell (ed.) Presencia irlandesa en la milicia española/The Irish Presence in the Spanish Military – 16th to 20th Centuries (Comisión Internacional de Historia Militar, Madrid, 2014), pp. 131 – 192.

28 March 2014: Disarmament and Non-Proliferation symposium at RoyaI Irish Academy (co-organiser). Outreach was one of the core goals of the symposium. Dublin city second-level students, undergraduates and postgraduates from UCC, Trinity College, DCU and UCD, attended the symposium. The event also saw high-level attendance by the diplomatic corps, including at ambassadorial level, from a number of missions. Irish civil society groups, such as the Irish Red Cross, Pax Christi, Irish CND and the Peace and Neutrality Alliance were also in attendance. The Irish Times attended the morning session and conducted an interview with Ms. Thurlow, which was published on 31 March. Furthermore, an opinion piece promoting the symposium was published on TheJournal.ie giving the event wide public exposure with over 20,000 unique views. International NGOs also picked up the event on social media networks.

3 Oct. 2013:  Interviewed Emer Reynolds, Director and triple-IFTA-winning Film Editor, and chaired Question and Answer session following a screening of Here was Cuba, a documentary based on interviews with key witnesses and experts of  the Cuban Missile Crisis including Ted Sorensen and Sergei Khruschev.  It was part of a film festival that Suas Educational Development organised in UCC. 8x8 Documentary Film Festival was a component of its Global Campus programme which aimed to engage university students in learning about and getting involved in global issues.

Sept. 2010: A historical adviser to Animo TV on Ryan Tubridy's documentary JFK: A Homecoming, shown on RTE One, 25 October 2010.

Sept. 2010: interviewed by World Media Rights for an episoide in the series Nazi Collaborators re: IRA collaboration with Nazi Germany. Episode subsequently shown on Yesterday (formerly UKTV History) and History channel on several occasions.

18 May 2010: In cooperation with Alliance Francaise de Cork, co-organised the 'European Symposium 2010' to commemorate 'the 60th Anniversary of the Schuman Declaration', which was supported by the Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council. It was open to the university community as well as the wider community. Participants included the Lord Mayor of Cork, Minister of State for European Affairs (Dick Roche), Tony Brown (Institute for International and European Affairs, Dublin), Centre Européen Robert Schuman, Atelier Europe etc. in addition to students and academics (from UCC, University of Limerick, Univeristy of Paris VIII) etc. It was held on Tuesday, 18 May 2010 at UCC.

19 July 2009: Delivered invited keynote lecture to the Inchigeela-based 'Daniel Corkery Summer School'; 'De Valera's Ireland in the 1930s: A Foreign Policy Perspective'.
