Before arriving at UCC in 2008, I completed a PhD in modern and contemporary art at University College London (2003-7). My thesis was concerned with issues of temporality and embodiment in drawing after 1940. Prior to this, I studied History of Art as an undergraduate at the University of Nottingham (1997-2000) and at Masters level at UCL (2001-2). During and after the completion of my PhD, I taught in several History of Art and Fine Art departments in the UK, including the University of York, UCL, Camberwell College of Art, and University College for the Creative Arts (Maidstone). As well as publishing academic articles and catalogue essays, I also work as a critic, and have written reviews for numerous magazines, including Art in America and Parachute. I am also founding editor of Enclave Review, a contemporary arts review sheet based in Cork.

My research focuses upon the history and theory of post-war drawing, with an emphasis upon phenomenological questions of temporality and embodiment. Artists of primary concern include Henri Matisse, Robert Rauschenberg, Joseph Beuys, Marcel Broodthaers and Tacita Dean. The ways in which drawing sets itself in productive dialogue with other representational practices (painting, writing, sculpture and, especially, film) is also an enduring interest. As well as courses on the history of drawing, I also teach modules in Western European and American art since 1945. In this, I am particularly concerned with questions of authorship and spectatorship. That is, with what is at stake, firstly, in the encounter between artist and artwork in the process of its production and, secondly, between artwork and viewer in the event of its reception. This involves a consideration of what art does, including but also in excess of what it means. In addition, I am working to explore the question of what ethical and political claims can be made for such encounters.

My teaching interests focus upon two main areas:

1) European and American art after 1945.
2) The History and Theory of Drawing.

I also teach modules exploring various theoretical approaches to Art History.
