Before arriving at UCC in 2008, I completed a PhD in modern and contemporary art at University College London (2003-7), under the supervision of Briony Fer. My thesis was concerned with issues of temporality and embodiment in drawing after 1940. Prior to this, I studied History of Art as an undergraduate at the University of Nottingham (1997-2000) and at Master’s level at UCL (2001-2). During and after the completion of my PhD, I taught in several History of Art and Fine Art departments in the UK, including the University of York, UCL, Camberwell College of Art, and University College for the Creative Arts (Maidstone). I have published my research in such journals as Art History, Oxford Art Journal, Art in America and Tate Papers, and have written catalogue essays for institutions including the Irish Museum of Modern Art (Dublin), Tate Modern (London), Matt’s Gallery (London), and Talbot Rice Gallery (Edinburgh). In 2010 I also co-founded the contemporary art magazine, Enclave Review, of which I am contributing co-editor.

Research Interests

My research focuses upon the history and theory of drawing in Western Europe and America after 1945. While I have a longstanding interest in phenomenological questions of temporality and embodiment in relation to drawing specifically, more recently I have become especially involved with problems of autonomy and heteronomy in art since World War II and with the role of aesthetic experience in contemporary practice. I have published my research in Art History, Oxford Art Journal, Tate Papers and Art in America, with articles on the drawings of Henri Matisse, Wols, Eva Hesse and Tacita Dean. I am currently working towards a book on Robert Rauschenberg’s XXXIV Drawings for Dante’s Inferno (1958-60). I welcome applications to pursue PhD research on the history and theory of drawing, or on any aspect of Western European and American art after 1945.
