Biography
Rhoda Dullea is a lecturer at UCC School of Music and Theatre, where she obtained her PhD in historical musicology in 2005. She currently lectures in applied musicianship, performance theory, and music history. Rhoda obtained a Masters in Piano Accompaniment at the Cork School of Music, CIT in 2007, and she is professionally active as a piano accompanist, particularly in the area of community choral performance, opera and dance. She works regularly as accompanist with the Cork School of Music Suzuki scheme and for CSM grade examinations, and has worked in and researched non-formal music education opportunities for children and youth. Having trained intensively in the Kodály approach to solfège at the Cork School of Music from a very early age, Rhoda has retained a particular interest in this approach, and has undertaken Continuing Professional Development courses at the British Kodály Academy.
Rhoda worked as assistant répétiteur with the Cork Opera 2005 theatre company between 2006-2009, developing an interest in performing arts education and outreach after becoming involved in Cork Opera 2005 company’s community education programme at that time. In 2009, she was awarded a residency as assistant répétiteur with the “Opera as Theatre” summer programme at the Banff Arts Centre, Alberta, Canada. She completed a part-time Masters in Education (Arts, Creativity, Education and Culture) at the University of Cambridge in 2013, where she pursued studies in the area of interdisciplinary arts education, with a specific emphasis on opera education and outreach. More recent related research interests have been in the area of situated learning in arts organisation contexts, and dance education. Rhoda is also currently exploring the scholarship of teaching and learning of music in higher education while completing the UCC Postgraduate Masters in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (Autumn 2021).
Rhoda also co-ordinates and performs as cantor with a Gregorian chant choir based at Saints Peter and Paul's Church, Cork, where she works as an organist and music director.
