Research Profile

Constantin Holzer

Biography

Constantin Holzer graduated with a PhD in Economics from Renmin University of China before starting his career in UCC as Lecturer in Chinese Business. His research focuses on Chinese entrepreneurship and innovation cooperation between China and the EU as well as the dynamics of state-society relations in China under its economic reform process. Before his appointment at UCC he worked as a trainee in the section ‘Science, Technology and Environment’ at the European Union Delegation in Beijing and was awarded the Marietta-Blau Research Fellowship from the Austrian Ministry of Science, Research and Economy for his research on Chinese entrepreneurship and business ethics.
Constantin has also coordinated 2 Horizon 2020 proposal submissions under the EU-China Flagship Cooperation in the areas of Sustainable Urbanisation and Food Safety. The application for both projects, ECHIS (Ecological Citizen Heritage through Innovative Solutions) and CISFOS (Consumer-Focused Solutions For Implementing Transnational Food Safety Controls In China and the EU), has been funded with coordinator grants by Enterprise Ireland and UCC CACSSS.

Research Interests

My research identity revolves around two topical strands of academic engagement, one more theoretical, the other more applied. These are China’s Political Economy and State-Business relations in the People’s Republic of China from the beginning of economic reform in 1978 till today, as well as China-EU relations in the area of economic development and innovation. In this context I am interested in the evolution of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and business ethics, as well as China's digital economy and the impact of social credit ratings on businesses. I also enjoy looking into explaining variations between China and European countries using a comparative institutional approach, and to highlight potential synergies and opportunities for cooperation between China and Europe where possible.

Constantin Holzer (2017) Invited seminar at Copenhagen Business School, on Tuesday, October 31, 2017, 12:30 to 14:00: The role of Chinese entrepreneurs in state-society relations has become a popular topic in research on China. Aided by China’s new Charity Law, corporate environmental philanthropy has become an important catalyst to foment social change. The last years saw Chinese entrepreneurs emerge as a distinct group of potential mediators between the state and civil society, the logic of which defies conventional theories of both top-down corporatism as well as bottom-up civil society transformation.
