My publications in these areas include edited collections of essays, as well as scholarly articles, book chapters, and a monograph entitled Tuscan Spaces: Literary Constructions of Place (U of Toronto P, 2010). I collaborated on an interdisciplinary project titled 'Identity and Conflict in Tuscany' and am developing an international research network on 'Tuscan Studies'. I am interested in supervising PhD students and mentoring Post-Doctoral researchers in these and other, related fields.
I was educated in Canada, Italy and the United States. I earned my BA in Italian and French from the University of Toronto in 1989 and spent my third year abroad at the Università degli Studi di Firenze. I did my graduate work in Italian literature at the Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD), where I obtained my MA in 1992 and my PhD in 1996, and spent three semesters at the Charles S. Singleton Centre, Villa Spelman, Florence. While completing my dissertation, I taught Italian language at Duke University in Durham, NC in the Department of Romance Studies for two years, as Visiting Lecturer.
I took up my post in the Italian Department at University College Cork in 1996 and have been Senior Lecturer since 2008. I was Associate Dean and Head of the Graduate School of the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences (CACSSS) from Jan 2011 to Sept 2013. The Graduate School delivers doctoral training, oversees postgraduate funding and runs a variety of activities that enhance the research culture of the College. I am a member of the steering committee for UCC's Athena Swan bronze application. I was director of UCC's BA International programme of the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences in which students spend their third year studying at a foreign university. I was Head of the Department of Italian from 2018-2021.

My research centres on questions of space, place and identity in the text, in particular in twentieth-century works set in Tuscany. My monograph, Tuscan Spaces: Literary Constructions of Place (U of Toronto P, 2010) examines the role of spatial representation and questions of identity and alterity in a variety of authors, Italian and non-Italian, including Federigo Tozzi, Aldo Palazzeschi, Vasco Pratolini, E. M. Forster, Dario Argento, Frances Mayes, David Leavitt and Mark Mitchell, and Elena Gianini Belotti. The book has been reviewed in the journals Annali d’Italianistica (501-03), Studies in Travel Writing, the Journal of Modern Italian Studies, Forum Italicum, and Corriere della Sera, among others.
I co-founded the international Cross-disciplinary Approaches to Urban Space Network with Prof Giulio Giovannoni (U of Florence). The Network organizes seminars and conferences, and Prof Giovannoni and I have co-edited a themed issue of Annali d'Italianistica on Urban Space and the Body (2019) as well as a volume of essays titled Cross-Disciplinary Approaches to Italian Urban Space (DIDA Press, 2019). I have co-edited, with Marina Spunta, a volume of essays on ecocriticism and Italian culture (Franco Cesati, 2022).
Another primary area of interest is Travel Writing, and I have co-edited a volume, Mediterranean Travels: Writing Self and Other from the Ancient World to Contemporary Society (Legenda, 2011), to which I contributed a chapter on the role of food and identity in contemporary American travel narratives set in Central Italy (Nabhan and Mayes). I have also co-edited a volume of essays on gender and Italian culture, titled Gendered Contexts: New Perspectives in Italian Cultural Studies (Peter Lang, 1996). I have also published articles and book chapters in my areas of specialization.
My current research revolves around the concept of identity and sites of conflict in Tuscany. I have completed a monograph titled Subverted Sites: Textual Representations of Conflict in Tuscany (currently under consideration with a university press), which includes chapters ranging from Aldo Palazzeschi; Oriana Fallaci; Antonio Tabucchi; Edoardo Nesi; and Michael Ondaatje; to Thomas Harris and Ridley Scott's 'Hannibal' texts, and Preston & Spezi's Monster of Florence. I co-organized (with Prof Claire Honess, Leeds) an interdisciplinary conference on this theme entitled ‘Identity and Conflict in Tuscany’, funded by the Society for Italian Studies, the UCC Strategic Research Fund, the Department of Italian (UCC) and Leeds University, School of Modern Languages. This conference resulted in the publication of the peer-reviewed, co-edited volume, Identity and Conflict in Tuscany (Firenze University Press, 2015). I then co-organized a follow-up conference at the Monash University Prato Centre, titled 'Tuscan Territories: Rural-Urban Dynamics.' The conferences have served to start up an international research network on Tuscan Studies.
