Research Profile

Oliver Scharbrodt

Biography

Dr Oliver Scharbrodt (since 1 Sept 2014 Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Chester, UK) studied Comparative Religion, Islamic Studies and Philosophy at the University of Bonn in Germany and completed his graduate studies and research in London, obtaining his MA and PhD from SOAS, the School of Oriental and African Studies. After teaching for a few years in London and in the USA, Dr Scharbrodt joined the Study of Religions Department at UCC in 2008. Responsible for teaching courses on Islam, his research interests lie in the intellectual history of modern Islam, the historical and contemporary presence of Islam in Europe and the role of mystical, esoteric and millenarian traditions of Islam in the modern world. Between 2008 and 2011, Dr Scharbrodt was the principal investigator of a research project, funded by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS), investigating the historical development and current situation of Islam in Ireland.

Research Interests

Dr Scharbrodt is the author of Islam and the Baha'i Faith: A Comparative Study of Muhammad `Abduh and `Abdul-Baha `Abbas (London and New York: Routledge 2008) (also available as paperback published 2011). This book investigates the relationship and biographies of Muhammad `Abduh, a leading Muslim reformer of the 19th century, and `Abdul-Baha `Abbas, son of the founder of the Baha'i Faith, a new religious movement with roots in 19th century Shii Islam. Islam and the Baha'i Faith provides new insights into the Islamic background of the Baha'i Faith and into `Abduh's own association with so-called heretical movements in Islam. Dr Scharbrodt has also worked and published on Muhammad `Abduh, investigating in particular his association with Sufism. From 2008 to 2011, Dr Scharbrodt was the principal investigator of a research project on the history and currrent place of Islam in Ireland.
