Eimear McGeown

Biography

Eimear McGeown is a lecturer in the Department of Accounting and Finance at University College Cork (UCC) where she lectures in financial accounting and entrepreneurial finance.   Eimear is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants Ireland and an Associate of the Institute of Bankers.  She has a broad range of experience in the private sector including accounting, corporate finance and corporate banking.  This experience has formed the basis of her PhD study on the role of non-bank finance in the Irish SME sector.  Her PhD is an empirical study on the determinants of the demand and supply of non-bank debt finance to the SME sector in Ireland and the impact of same on firm performance.

Research Interests

Eimear's main research interests are in financing for small and medium sized enterprises and accounting education.

My PhD examines the Role of Non-Bank Debt Finance in the SME Finance Ecosystem.  It looks both the demand and supply side of non-band debt finance and its impact on funding gaps and also considers if the use of non-bank debt impacts firm performance.  This topic has becoming increasing important as banks continue to restructure, contract and consolidate as they focus on profitability.  This is particularly true in in Ireland where the banking market is concentrated.  

Paper 2 from my PhD: Is Non-Bank Finance closing SME funding gaps? McGeown E., Power B. & Shinnick E,  won best paper award in the entrepreneurial finance track at the 2021 ISBE conference in Cardiff.  It and was also nominated for the president’s award for best paper by an early career researcher.

Paper 3 from my PhD: Non-Bank Debt and SME Performance? McGeown E., Power B. & Shinnick E,  won best paper award in the entrepreneurial finance track at the 2022 ISBE conference in York.  It and was also nominated for the president’s award for best paper by an early career researcher.
