Research Interests

I have been heavily involved in a number of industry funded research and development projects, and have taken an active role in the formation of the Financial Services Innovation Centre. These activities highlight my commitment to developing deep linkages with industry. This work involves a number of research domains including

knowledge management, Decision Support, Innovation and Design Thinking.

Knowledge Management
I recently completed a PhD thesis in the area of knowledge management. This area has grown in importance due to the emergence of the knowledge economy. Knowledge management is a multi-disciplinary domain that has its origins in multiple fields. Much of the extant research has focused on what knowledge management systems are, yet fails to provide insight into what capabilities and functionality they should provide. Moreover, there has been a tendency, in the IS literature, to treat knowledge management as a primarily technical discipline. This is in stark contrast to KM research in other academic domains. My thesis addresses this imbalance and proposes a mechanism-based view of knowledge transfer within organisations. I have also taken part in a number of research and development (R&D) in this area.

Innovation in Financial Services
Enterprise Ireland, IDA and Forfas have identified that internationally traded services will occupy a more significant role in the development of the Irish economy over forthcoming years, with a particular emphasis on the financial services sector. The Expert Group on Future Skills Needs Report of December 2007 also states that "innovation is viewed as an integral part of maintaining competitiveness". Through my involvement with the BIS Innovation Centre and the Financial Services Innovation Centre, I have taken part in a number of collaborative research projects with financial services sector companies. More specifically, my research has focused on how technological innovations can be used to improve service delivery.

The S-HELP Project (FP7 Funded)

I am currently a Work package leader on a €3.5 million FP7 funded project: Securing Health Emergency Learning Planning – Development of Decision Support Tools for Improving Preparedness and Response of Health Services Involved in Emergency Situations. S-HELP is a collaborative project with consortium members from Austria, Ireland, Israel, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. The central aim of the S-HELP project is to develop and deliver a holistic framed approach to healthcare preparedness, response and recovery. S-HELP is a people, process and technological solution to emergency situations. Work package four (WP4) is the largest work package and includes the design, development and integration of the Decision Support tools and Integration of the tool-set. The S-HELP Decision Support System (DSS) will bring major benefits to emergency healthcare management, from learning and preparing for emergency incidents and analysing threats, to post evaluation, reporting and logistics management. It provides a unique mechanism to assist stakeholders and end users to work together for co-ordinated, effective, evidence based decisions at all stages of emergency management (EM).

Top three research outputs

Pope, A. and Butler, T. (2012). Unpacking the people, process and technology dimensions of organisational KMS . In: Jan Pries-Heje, Mike Chiasson, Jonathan Wareham, Xavier Busquets, Josep Valor, et al eds. 20th European Conference on Information Systems Barcelona, Spain,

This paper is the first paper from my PhD thesis which I had just completed prior to ECIS 2012.  This paper examined the analysis and design of knowledge management systems within consultancy organisations. Much of the extant research on information systems has focused on what knowledge management systems (KMS) are, yet failed to provide insight into what capabilities and functionality they should provide. This paper addressed some of these concerns through a rich description of the design and development of two KMS implementation. Moreover, its acceptance in the conference played an important validation role in terms of my PhD thesis.

Butler, T., Feller, J., Pope, A., Murphy, C. and Emerson, B., Journal of Strategic Information Systems, 2008, Vol. 17, No. 4, pp, 249-267, Designing a Core IT Artifact for Knowledge Management Systems: An Action Research Study of a Government and a Non-Government Organization, ISSN: 0963-8687.

From 2003-2006 I took part in a major collaborative R&D project on the development of an enterprise KMS, the eGovernment Knowledge Platform (eGovKP), in the Department of Communication Marine and Natural Resources. Lessons learned from the pKADS R&D project were used to inform the design of the KMS. This paper, published in an A ranked journal, represents the culmination of this accumulated experiential knowledge. The paper provides a very useful contribution to both KMS theory and praxis through the provision of a conceptual knowledge management schema, based on practical theory, and through the description of the functions and features of typical core IT artefacts.

Adam, F., Feller, J. and Pope, A., The Trading Desk of the Future, Report prepared for Research Partner (Non Disclosure Agreement), 2005, 20 p.

In parallel with my work on Knowledge Management systems I have also been highly involved in collaborative research with a number of organisations in the financial services sector. In 2004-2005, I was a member of three person research team who designed and constructed a prototype "Trading Desk of the Future" for a leading UK financial service firm in their UK headquarters in Canary Wharf, London.

 Description

My research focuses on the areas of knowledge management systems (KMS) and innovation models. I have worked on a number of high profile, industry funded KMS research projects, most notably with the Government of Ireland and the United Nations Population fund. This research has resulted in articles in both peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings. In 2008 I completed an Enterprise Ireland funded study on innovation models in the financial services sector. I have also been actively involved in the Service Design and Design Thinking space where I have mentored local startups and businesses on the benefits of design thinking.

Teaching Interests

My teaching has focused on computer programming (with a focus on Microsoft .NET technologies) and trends in Information Systems and Technology research and practice. Every effort is made to ensure the students are exposed to cutting edge ideas and research concepts. The combination of theory and practice provides students with the relevant skills and techniques of the modern IS professional. In particular, I have been one of the first academics in Ireland to teach design thinking methods.

Teaching computer programming in a lecture based environment presents a number of challenges. The lecturer must promote understanding of complex topics and stimulate interest. In addition to traditional effective teaching methods, I also write and demonstrate code examples during lecture hours using the same programming tools that students will use in their tutorials. This provides the students with a familiarity of the programming environment and represents a very useful technique for bridging the gap between theory and practice. I also encourage inquiry-based learning whereby students are encouraged to actively participate to facilitate their understanding. I teach my students the benefits of establishing a good theoretical foundation, whilst also providing the analytical skills to critically review espoused theory. I have also been able to apply my knowledge of innovation best practice and software development to enhance my supervision and support of final year development projects.
