Research Profile

Biography

The PhD I am currently working on is the main focus of my research activities at present. This is titled, ‘The Role of Information Systems in the Management of Compliance Risk'. I have also published papers on this topic and see this area as worthy of research over the next few years. This research focuses on the problems faced by organisations when navigating complex bodies of regulation, which is on the increase due to effects such as global warming, green pressures and the global financial crisis. This research hopes to identify how information systems can be used in the future to help organisations and individuals meet the demands of an increasingly complex legal and regulatory environment. This research builds on earlier research on the practical construction of knowledge management systems, and applies outputs from that research to the construction of compliance management systems.

I am currently engaged as a Principal Investigator for the GRCTC, the Governance, Risk and Compliance Technology Center. This research is focused on developing a novel IT artefact for the capturing of complex financial regulations within a semantic framework.

Top Three Research Outputs

My research has concentrated on both the theoretical foundation and background of compliance management and the practical construction of compliance management systems. This research on the practical construction of compliance management systems has been derived from earlier research on the construction of knowledge management systems. After first working on the practical construction of knowledge management systems, one output of this research was the paper; "An action research study on the design and development of core it artifacts for knowledge management systems", (see below). A period of consultancy then followed with a small software company, investigating practical methods of constructing compliance knowledge management systems, with the paper "Pragmatic Design: A Case Study of Innovation in a Small Software Company" (see below) being one of the outputs. A consultancy report for the company in question was also prepared (see below). This work has led to other publications in this area, including "Compliance-as-a-Service in IT Manufacturing Organizations: An Exploratory Case Study", (see below).
