Research Profile

Gaye Louise Kiely

Biography

Dr. Gaye Kiely is a college lecturer and researcher at University College Cork. She received her BSc. Business Information Systems (BIS) in 1998. After working as an IT consultant (focusing on web development), she returned to academia, receiving her MSc. (Research) in 2001. Since 2000, Dr. Kiely has held the position of college lecturer within the Department of Business Information Systems, teaching business analysis, database theory, data modelling, systems development, and programming. In addition to teaching, she has acted as year coordinator for several undergraduate classes. Dr. Kiely held the position of BSc. BIS programme Co-Director 2013-2022.
Dr. Kiely's early research interests were focused on the use of lifecycle models and methodologies for software development. Dr. Kiely was awarded her PhD on the topic of coordination mechanisms in global virtual teams for software development projects. More recently, her research work has shifted towards open data, collaborative work, inclusion, and community sustainability. Dr. Kiely is Co-Principal Investigator for the TOTO (Technology-Enabled Organizational Transparency and Openness) Project.

Research Interests

My research interests fall into three strands: (i) global virtual teams; (ii) openness; and (iii) inclusion in IT. In the past, the main focus has been on Global Virtual Teams (GVTs) for software development. GVTs enable organisations to operate across national, economic and social, and cultural boundaries. There are many incentives for organisations to engage such team structures such as lowering cost, sourcing skills etc. In fact, the use of GVTs in software development has become standard practice for organisations. However, this form of teamwork presents significant issues for traditional project management coordination mechanisms. The development of increasingly complex software artefacts further complicates the use of such teams. My research focuses specifically on the impact that geographical distance, temporal distance, language, culture and lack of trust issues have on the effectiveness of coordination mechanisms in GVTs. Broadly, I am interested in new ways of work and methods that support distributed work. More recently, my research interests have expanded to include the issue of low female participation in IT careers and open data, collaborative work, and online community sustainability. Overall, the common theme of my research interests is collaboration.
