Dr. Andrew Cottey is Senior Lecturer and Jean Monnet Chair in European Political Integration, Department of Government, University College Cork. He has been at UCC since 1999 and is currently Head of the Department of Government. His teaching and research are in the areas of international relations and international security. He has been a NATO Research Fellow, a Research Associate at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) and a Visiting Researcher at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). He previously taught at the Department of Peace Studies, University of Bradford (1993-99). His publications include Security in 21st Century Europe (Palgrave Macmillan, 2nd edition 2013) and Understanding Chinese Politics: An Introduction to Government in the People’s Republic of China (co-authored with Neil Collins, Manchester University Press, 2012).

He is married to Maeve Lankford and has three sons, Eoin, Oisin and Ultan. He hopes for world peace and a second England football world cup victory, but has no expectation of either being achieved soon.

Research Interests

                         

Dr. Andrew Cottey’s research interests are in the areas of international relations, international security and global governance. His research has focused on European security, with a particular emphasis on the development of European security institutions (NATO, the European Union (EU), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and sub-regional institutions), the conditions of peace in Europe and security in post-communist Europe. Other research interests include:

comparative regional security cooperation; peacekeeping, intervention and conflict management; civil-military relations and democracy; and defence diplomacy (the use of armed forces for non-forceful politico-diplomatic purposes). He is also interested in Chinese foreign policy, Sino-European relations and European relations with the Asia-Pacific region and Asian states.  He welcomes expressions of interest from potential PhD students interested in working in any of the above, or related, areas. His books include Security in 21st Century Europe (Palgrave Macmillan, 2nd edition 2013), Understanding Chinese Politics: An Introduction to Government in the People’s Republic of China (co-authored with Neil Collins, Manchester University Press, 2012), Reshaping Defence Diplomacy: New Roles for Military Cooperation and Assistance (co-authored with Anthony Forster, Oxford University Press/IISS, 2004) and East-Central Europe After the Cold War: Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary in Search of Security (Macmillan, 1995). His work has also been published in journals such as Contemporary Security Policy, International Affairs, Armed Forces & Society, Contemporary Politics and European Foreign Affairs Review.
