Anthony Costello

Biography

Anthony’s primary research interests lie in European Union (EU) integration and governance with a specific focus on intergovernmental negotiations and the dynamics of inter-state preference bargaining processes.

His teaching interests include theories of European integration and governance, history of the EU and policy/treaty making processes in the EU. Anthony’s wider teaching interests include comparative European government and politics, conflict and conflict resolution studies and Irish and Northern Irish politics.

He is currently a member of the Political Studies Association of Ireland (PSAI), the University Association of Contemporary European Studies (UACES) and is a board member of the Irish Association of Contemporary European Studies (IACES).

In addition to his formal academic research outputs, he contributes regularly to the London School of Economics’ (LSE) BREXIT and EUROPP blogs and the PSAI’s Irish Politics Forum.

In 2018, Anthony was commissioned by European Movement Ireland on behalf of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to prepare Ireland's National Report on the Citizens' Dialogues on the Future of Europe. In 2019, he was consulted by the Institute of European Politics in Berlin on behalf of the German Federal Foreign Office for the 'Transformation of European Party Systems: Reasons and Impact' project.

Anthony holds a PhD from University College Cork (UCC). His PhD dissertation explored Ireland’s role in negotiating the 2012 Fiscal Stability Treaty (Fiscal Compact). He also holds an MSc in Nationalism and Ethno-Communal Conflict Resolution from University College Dublin (UCD) and a joint major B.A in Politics and Philosophy from University College Dublin (UCD).

He has recently completed a postgraduate certificate and postgraduate diploma in Teaching and Learning in Higher education from UCC.

Research Interests

My research interests pertain to intergovernmental decision-making processes in line with the New Intergovernmentalist and deliberative intergovernmentalist literatures. I have a special interest in Economic Governance and Foreign Policy in the EU.
